Vietnam, Thailand agree to expand cooperation in potential areas

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul co-chaired a press conference following the high-level talks on May 28 to announce the key outcomes of the talks and witness the exchange of memoranda of understanding and cooperation documents between ministries, sectors and localities of the two countries.

Speaking at the press briefing, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he was pleased to welcome To Lam, his spouse and the Vietnamese high-level delegation to Thailand, stressing that the visit carries special significance as the two nations mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic

It also provides a basis for both sides to further advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a deeper and more substantive manner, bringing practical benefits to the two countries’ people.

Host and guest held open and candid discussions and shared consensus on directions to strengthen cooperation across all areas under the Vietnam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Both sides agreed to step up coordination in responding to current uncertainties and fluctuations in the global economy, including through stronger cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries, while working towards the goal of raising bilateral trade to US$25 billion annually.

In the coming period, the two sides will focus on enhancing cooperation in energy security, science and technology, innovation, biotechnology and agriculture. The Thai PM noted that the two countries could also work together to boost economic development in the Mekong sub-region.

He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the talks will continue to strengthen friendship, trust and cooperation between the two countries, contributing to the interests of their people.

Addressing the press, To Lam said the two sides had held highly successful talks and achieved many positive, comprehensive and substantive outcomes.

Both sides highly valued the positive progress in Vietnam-Thailand relations in recent years, he emphasized, noting that political trust has continued to strengthen, defence and security cooperation has expanded, while economic, trade and investment ties remain a bright spot.

People-to-people exchanges have been vibrant, while coordination at regional and international forums, particularly within ASEAN, has become increasingly close.

Building on that foundation, the two sides discussed in depth major directions and measures to further forge Vietnam-Thailand relations in a stronger, more sustainable and effective manner.

Both countries consented to further deepen political trust, considering it the political foundation for long-term and close bilateral ties; step up high-level exchanges and contacts across all channels; improve the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms; and maintain and promote the effectiveness of defence and security cooperation mechanisms.

They also pledged to ramp up cooperation in combating transnational crime, accelerate negotiations and the signing of bilateral legal cooperation agreements, and reaffirmed their commitment not to allow any individual or organisation to use one country’s territory against the other.

The top Vietnamese leader stressed that the two countries will expand cooperation in potential sectors such as clean energy, the digital economy, the green economy, innovation and high-tech agriculture, while boosting transport infrastructure and logistics connectivity and making effective use of economic corridors in the Mekong sub-region, especially the East-West Economic Corridor, to facilitate the movement of goods and services between the two countries and across the region.

Regarding cooperation between localities, To Lam said the two sides will work to improve the effectiveness of cooperation, promote tourism, strengthen cultural and educational links, and expand people-to-people exchanges, especially among younger generations, thereby deepening mutual understanding and ties between the two peoples.

Appreciating the attention and support provided by the Thai Government to the Vietnamese community living, studying and working in Thailand, To Lam affirmed that the community serves as a valuable bridge in bilateral relations and remains an inseparable part of efforts to preserve and develop friendship and close ties between the two countries’people.

On regional and international issues, To Lam reaffirmed the importance of maintaining ASEAN unity and centrality, while the two sides agreed to strengthen coordination on issues of shared concern, including promoting peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight in the East Sea, and resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law.

He also welcomed Thailand and Cambodia’s serious implementation of the ceasefire agreement and expressed hope that the two countries will continue dialogue and peacefully resolve border disputes for the long-term interests of both sides and the wider region.

To Lam expressed confidence that with the shared determination of the leaders and people of both countries, the Vietnam-Thailand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to develop in a stronger, more substantive and effective manner, serving the interests of the people and making positive contributions to peace, cooperation and development in the region and the world.
