Vietnam, Singapore forge stronger ties as city-state turns 60

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Singapore mark 60 years of the city-state’s independence with commitments to deepen their newly upgraded Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, advancing cooperation in trade, innovation, and regional stability.

The Singapore Embassy in Hanoi hosted a reception on the evening of August 12 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s National Day (August 9, 1965 – August 9, 2025).

Attending the ceremony on behalf of the Government and people of Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung extended congratulations to the Government and people of Singapore, as well as to the Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam. He emphasized that, six decades after gaining independence, Singapore remains a source of inspiration for many countries and peoples in the region and around the world, including Vietnam.

Singapore is a model of ambition, dedication to learning and innovation, meritocracy, social discipline, and smart governance, guided by generations of leaders with a forward-looking vision.

Having overcome numerous regional and global challenges, Singapore has transformed from a small fishing village into a modern nation and a prominent financial and economic hub, built on the courage, faith, and steadfast determination of its people.

Stressing that the Vietnam–Singapore relationship is rooted in people-to-people ties, Deputy PM Nguyen Chi Dung noted that, after navigating the “rapids” of history and more than half a century of tests, the two nations now enjoy a stronger-than-ever bond. This, he said, is a valuable asset for both peoples and a model of inter-state relations in the region.

Today, Singapore is a key economic partner, Vietnam’s second-largest foreign investor, and a trusted companion in the country’s process of renewal, integration, and development. Notably, the Vietnam–Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP), operating successfully in many provinces, stand as a model of “win–win” cooperation between the two governments and business communities.

The two countries are also promoting their Green Economy–Digital Economy Partnership and the Framework for Connecting the Two Economies, pioneering cooperation in emerging fields where their strengths complement each other, including science and technology, innovation, digital transformation, and energy transition.

Tens of thousands of Vietnamese students and officials have received training in Singapore; hundreds of thousands of visitors travel between the two countries each year for tourism and business; and over 30,000 Vietnamese live, work, and study in the city state

Vietnam and Singapore share many common stances on regional and international issues, cooperate actively, and support each other at multilateral forums. Both are committed to building a united and cohesive ASEAN, a stable and prosperous Asia, and a peaceful, thriving world.

Building on these shared values, in March 2025, the two countries officially upgraded their ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Party General Secretary To Lam’s visit to Singapore with his spouse. This took place in a year of major milestones for both nations: the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s National Day and the 60th anniversary of Singapore’s National Day. As Vietnam’s highest level of diplomatic relations, the partnership creates fresh impetus to elevating bilateral cooperation to new heights, in line with the aspirations of the two peoples and their leaders.

“I wish to affirm Vietnam’s resolve to take peace and stability as the goal; dialogue and cooperation as the means; the region as the foundation; and to be ready, together with our Singaporean friends and international partners, to move forward,” the Deputy Prime Minister stated.

At the event, Singaporean Ambassador to Vietnam Jaya Ratnam reviewed Singapore’s six-decade journey of nation-building and development, and reaffirmed the commitment to further nurture and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with a view to ensuring Vietnam–Singapore relations continue to thrive.
