Vietnam represented at opening of 207th session of IPU Governing Council

VOV.VN - A delegation of the National Assembly (NA) led by Standing Vice Chairman Tran Thanh Man were in attendance at the opening of the 207th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council held on May 24 via a teleconference.

The session was chaired by Duarte Pacheco, president of the IPU, and featured the participation of Martin Chungong, secretary general of the IPU, along with representatives of 135 member parliaments worldwide.

During the course of the two-day event, Pacheco said this marked the second time  that the IPU Governing Council has met via videoconference following the 206th session held in November, 2020.

The decision was taken back in January 18 when the IPU Executive Committee decided that due to the complex developments of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the 142nd IPU Assembly would be held through a teleconference on May 26. The event is therefore running with the theme of “Overcoming the pandemic today and building a better tomorrow: the role of parliaments”.

Pacheco went on to emphasized that despite the complicated COVID-19 situation globally, the IPU and member parliaments have been able to maintain their normal activities.

He therefore called on member parliaments to enhance co-operation in order to devise solutions aimed at defeating the pandemic and boosting socio-economic recovery moving forward.

The IPU President also underscored the need to promote the IPU’s presence and effectiveness, along with fulfilling its strategies to increase women’s participation in the IPU, whilst simultaneously consolidating democracy and strengthening parliaments based around the world.

Throughout the function, delegates are due to adopt the session’s agenda, the special rules of procedure for virtual sessions held by the Assembly and standing committees, the summary records of the Governing Council’s 206th session, and the vision of the IPU President.

This should be done alongside a report on his activities since the 206th session of the Governing Council, the Annual IPU Impact Report by the Secretary General on the activities of the IPU in 2020, and the financial results for last year.

Furthermore, the Governing Council will also elect additional members to the Executive Committee and other IPU bodies.
