Vietnam ready for UN peacekeeping missions
VOV.VN - Vietnam is poised to take over a UK field hospital in South Sudan next year as well as deploy a sapper unit for a UN mission in 2019, said Head of the Vietnam Peacekeeping Center Hoang Kim Phung.
Colonel Phung told a UN fact-finding delegation in Hanoi on June 26 that participating in peacekeeping activities provides further evidence that Vietnam is a responsible member of the international community.
“We have prepared personnel for the field hospital and the sapper unit. They are to be trained over 9 months in order to successfully accomplish their duties,” he said.
He noted the Vietnamese army’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations receives great attention from all-level leaders. The country targets successfully taking over the level-2 field hospital in Bentiu city, part of the UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, in the second quarter of 2018. It also plans to deploy a military engineering unit to an appropriate UN mission in the near future.
The UN delegation greatly valued Vietnam’s policy on engaging in UN peacekeeping operations, describing it as a critical and decisive factor in the long-term deployment of forces to UN peacekeeping activities.
The UN delegation is in Vietnam to review preparations for peacekeeping programs including personnel qualifications and equipment.
