Vietnam readies security for APEC 2017 leaders’ week

A send-off ceremony for security forces and a counter-terrorism exercise to protect security at the coming APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Da Nang city were held on October 24.

The activities involved thousands of police officers from the Ministry of Public Security along with many local residents.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Bui Van Nam said since 2016, the sub-committee for security and health care has worked with four other sub-committees and the APEC 2017 National Secretariat to ensure security and order for APEC events this year.

The ministry has finished the APEC Week protection plan and forces are ready to perform their duties, he added.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc lauded the efforts of police and military forces and local administrations to successfully organise APEC meetings.

He asked authorities and sectors to be fully aware of the importance of the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Da Nang from November 6-11. They must ensure absolute safety for this event.

The week is expected to bring together heads of state and some 10,000 delegates from 21 APEC member economies.

Established in 1989, APEC comprises Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the US, and Vietnam.

Vietnam joined APEC in 1998 and is hosting APEC events in 2017 under the theme “Creating New Dynamism, Fostering a Shared Future”.
