Vietnam-Paraguay ties at 30 show expanding prospects for economic, trade and cultural cooperation
VOV.VN - The Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina, concurrently accredited to Paraguay, co-hosted a ceremony with Vietnam’s Honorary Consul in Paraguay María Del Carmen Pérez on December 11 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1995-2025).
Speaking at the ceremony, attended by Paraguay’s Minister of Language Javier Viveros, Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet highlighted that since diplomatic ties were formally established on May 30, 1995, the friendship and cooperation between the two nations have consistently reinforced. Despite geographical distance, Vietnam and Paraguay share notable similarities as both are agricultural nations with dynamic economies and resilient people.
Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet expressed appreciation for the strong turnout of Paraguayan representatives at the event, ranging from government officials to businesses in agriculture and telecommunications as well as members of the academic community, a reflection of the diverse cooperation potential between the two countries.
She applauded Paraguay’s progress in agricultural modernization, especially in livestock production and sustainable energy, noting that as much as 97% of its electricity comes from renewable sources. She added that Vietnam, one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, could serve as a strategic partner in helping Paraguay expand its presence across the regional market.
Regarding future cooperation, the Vietnamese diplomat said the two sides have considerable room to boost trade and investment ties, as Vietnam’s strengths in electronics manufacturing can complement Paraguay’s advantages in agriculture and clean energy. She also stated that both countries can utilize mechanisms such as MERCOSUR, of which Paraguay is a member, and other multilateral forums to step up cooperation.
On this occasion, Ambassador Nguyet underscored the important role of María Del Carmen Pérez, Vietnam’s Honorary Consul in Paraguay, in enhancing bilateral links and making considerable contributions to the organization of the 30th-anniversary celebration.
During her working trip to Asuncion, Ambassador Nguyet also held talks with Nimia Da Silva Boschert, Director General for Multilateral Policy at Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss ways to further enhance political, economic and trade cooperation, particularly within multilateral and regional frameworks such as the United Nations and MERCOSUR.
At a meeting with Ambassador Nguyet, Najeeb Amado, General Secretary of the Paraguayan Communist Party (PCP), shared updates on preparations for the party congress scheduled for May 2026. He conveyed his interest in exchanging experience in party building and organizing political-theory courses with the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV). He also praised Vietnam’s struggle for independence as well as the socio-economic achievements the country has obtained through its Doi Moi (Renewal) process.
Speaking to the press about Vietnam-Paraguay relations, Minister Viveros hailed the progress made by the two countries, especially in political dialogue and practical cooperation that have delivered mutual benefit. He noted that bilateral trade has maintained stable growth, while cultural and academic cooperation, though still modest, has contributed to enhancing mutual understanding.
Assessing future prospects, Minister Viveros said opportunities for cooperation are wide-ranging, particularly in trade and culture. He observed that Vietnam’s experience in tourism development could be valuable for Paraguay. Vietnam is also a major importer of steel-a key strength of Paraguay’s metallurgical sector. Paraguay, for its part, exports beef, cotton, soybeans and corn to Vietnam, while importing footwear, tires and electronic products.
Minister Viveros added that both countries still boast untapped potential in food industries, agri-tech, telecommunications, renewable energy and processing industries. He said academic exchanges, scholarships and cultural activities can be further promoted to deepen people-to-people understanding.
