Paraguay, Vietnam reinforce friendship and cooperation
VOV.VN - Vietnam always attaches importance to its relations with Paraguay, a key partner in Latin America and a member of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina, concurrently accredited to Paraguay and Uruguay, Ngo Minh Nguyet has said.
Ahead of her working visit to attend celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Paraguay (1995-2025) in Asuncion on December 11, Ambassador Ngo Minh Nguyet noted that the two countries share many similarities in their struggles for national independence, national defence, and socio-economic development. She also highlighted the steady progress of bilateral friendship over the past three decades.
The ambassador expressed appreciation for the support extended by the people of Paraguay to Vietnam’s fight for national independence and its development cause, and said the recent meeting between State President Luong Cuong and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly high-level general debate in New York underscored the solidarity, friendship, and sound cooperation between the two countries.
According to Ngo Minh Nguyet, Paraguay ranks among Vietnam’s 10 leading trading partners in Latin America. In 2024, two-way trade exceeded US$233 million, up 22.2% year on year, including US$115 million in exports and US$118 million in imports.
During the 10-month period of this year, bilateral trade reached nearly US$146 million. Vietnam’s major exports to Paraguay include mobile phones, footwear, textiles and garments, tyres, and electronics, while imports feature soybeans, meat and bone meal, cotton, frozen beef, and corn.
The Vietnamese diplomat said Paraguay supports the early launch of negotiations for a free trade agreement between Mercosur and Vietnam, and has expressed interest in Vietnam opening its market to agricultural products and expanding cooperation in processing industries, agriculture, and textiles and garments. She stated that economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries still holds substantial potential, while calling for closer exchanges to add fresh impetus to bilateral ties in the period ahead.
Both sides should intensify coordination to promote cultural and people-to-people exchanges, while strengthening cooperation and mutual support at multilateral forums, she added.
Paraguay is among the fastest-growing economies in Latin America, recording growth above the regional average thanks to macroeconomic stability. According to the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the South American country posted GDP growth of 4.3% in 2024, placing it among the strongest performers in the region.
