Vietnam, Japan boost defence cooperation

VOV.VN - Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong, chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, held talks with General Yoshida Yoshihide, chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defence Forces Joint Staff, in Japan on October 11.

The talks saw the two sides agree that their defence collaboration has deepened and become more collaborative over recent times.

Both nations signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Defence Cooperation and Exchanges in October, 2011, and the Joint Vision Statement on Defence Cooperation towards the next decade in April, 2018, with these documents serving as the foundation for bilateral ties in the field.

The two countries have further promoted delegation exchanges, effectively maintaining consultation and dialogue mechanisms, working together in the defence industry and the settlement of post-war consequences. This is along with offering mutual support other at multilateral forums in the region, particularly the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM).

Particularly, both sides united to organise the Competency Evaluation Programme for Prospective UN Peacekeepers (CEPPP) in Vietnam last September, fulfilling the role of co-chairs of the 14th meeting of the Experts’ Working Group on Peacekeeping Operations Cycle 4 for the 2021 to 2023 period within the framework of the ADMM.

Deputy Minister Cuong and his Japanese host reached a consensus on several measures aimed at promoting bilateral defence ties, with a particular focus on delegation exchanges, maintenance of existing consultation mechanisms, human resources training, the implementation of a programme to improve capacity in the fields of diving medicine and clearance of naval mines, UN peacekeeping activities, the recovery of post-war consequences, and bolstering co-ordination at multilateral mechanisms.
