Vietnam, Indonesia reinforce defence ties following strategic partnership upgrade
VOV.VN - Both nations are bolstering defence cooperation across key areas, including training, defense industry and multilateral dialogue following the upgrade to a comprehensive strategic partnership in March.

A delegation from the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia, led by Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, is paying an official visit to Vietnam from July 29 to 30, 2025 at the invitation of the Vietnamese Minister of National Defence.
General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, and Minister of National Defense chaired an official welcome ceremony for Indonesian Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and his delegation on the morning of July 30 in Hanoi.
Immediately following the welcome ceremony, the two sides held bilateral talks, during which General Phan Van Giang emphasized that Vietnam and Indonesia are neighboring countries sharing a maritime border and are both active, responsible members of the ASEAN Community.
According to the Vietnamese Minister of National Defence, the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025 marked a historic milestone, ushering in a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries, with political, defence, and security cooperation serving as key pillars.

In recent years, bilateral defence cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia has yielded positive results, making an important contribution to strengthening political trust between the two nations.
Key areas of cooperation include regular exchanges and meetings at all levels, especially high-level ones, which are highly valued by both sides; continued progress in collaboration among military services and maritime law enforcement forces; positive outcomes in defence industry cooperation; and increased coordination in United Nations peacekeeping operations and between strategic research institutions.
The two countries have also maintained close consultations and mutual support at multilateral forums, particularly ASEAN-led mechanisms and international events hosted by either side.
General Phan Van Giang congratulated Indonesia on the successful organization of the 10th Indonesia International Defence Expo in June 2025, and expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s participation in the 2024 Vietnam International Defence Expo.

He proposed that both sides continue to enhance their defense ties in a spirit of trust, comprehensiveness, and substance. Key areas of focus should include delegation exchanges and high-level meetings; further promotion of existing cooperation mechanisms, particularly the defense policy dialogue; training cooperation; collaboration among military services and in the defence industry; as well as close consultations and mutual support at multilateral mechanisms and forums.
Underscoring the steady growth of bilateral defence cooperation built on mutual trust, Indonesian Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin affirmed that his visit marks an important milestone in Indonesia–Vietnam defence ties. He suggested that the two ministries further beef up cooperation in line with the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established during Party General Secretary To Lam’s state visit to Indonesia in March 2025.
During the talks, the two sides also exchanged views on regional and global situations and issues of mutual concern. General Phan Van Giang reiterated Vietnam’s consistent stance on resolving all disputes in the East Sea by peaceful means and in accordance with international law.
