Vietnam, Indonesia step up anti-terrorism cooperation

VOV.VN- Vietnam and Indonesia reaffirmed their commitment to counter-terrorism at the second meeting of their Joint Working Group held on June 18 in Jakarta, co-chaired by Lieutenant General Pham The Tung, Deputy Minister of Public Security of Vietnam, and Deputy Chief of Indonesia’s National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Andhika Chrisnayudhanto.

Welcoming the Vietnamese delegation, Andhika stressed the meeting’s importance in further strengthening cooperation between BNPT and Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security in the period ahead.

At the session, both sides reviewed outcomes since the first meeting in Hanoi in December 2023, exchanged updates on counter-terrorism efforts in each country, and shared experience in carrying out specific initiatives.

Discussions focused on national counter-terrorism strategies; preventing radicalization and violent extremism; cyber-based threats; managing repatriated foreign terrorist fighters and convicted individuals; joint training and exercises; and future cooperation plans.

The two sides agreed that terrorism remains a serious threat to peace, security, and stability in both countries, the region, and the world. Terrorist groups continue to exploit global instability to spread propaganda, recruit members, and operate, thus posing a matter of deep concern.

They underlined the need to remain vigilant and affirmed that no country can combat terrorism alone. Strengthening international cooperation at all levels is essential to a comprehensive response. Both sides consented to maintain close coordination via a dedicated counter-terrorism hotline and to continue implementing the provisions of their bilateral Memorandum of Understanding.

In his closing remarks, Deputy Minister Pham The Tung affirmed that the MoU reflects the strong cooperation between the two sides and serves as a solid foundation for taking bilateral counter-terrorism efforts to a deeper and more effective level. The outcomes of this second meeting, he said, will help strengthen the Vietnam–Indonesia strategic partnership and contribute to regional peace and security.
