Vietnam hails continued negotiations within Syrian Constitutional Committee framework

VOV.VN - The country welcomes efforts made by various parties to press forward with negotiations within the framework of the Syrian Constitutional Committee for the purpose of finding a long-term solution to issues faced by Syria.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, made the statement while attending a virtual monthly meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on November 25 to discuss the ongoing situation in Syria.

During his remarks, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy put forward the suggestion that a constructive dialogue should be maintained as a means of finding a long-term solution to the difficulties.

The only reliable solution to the crisis in the Middle Eastern country moving forward is a political solution based on the respect for international law, the UN Charter, independence, sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Syria, the diplomat added.

The Ambassador noted that special attention is needed in order to fully address three urgent needs, including increasing capacity in response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, a major focus on dealing with food security, and preparing for a spike in humanitarian demand during the upcoming winter.

With regard to the humanitarian situation, Rajasingham, acting assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and deputy emergency relief coordinator in the UN, said the situation has seen no improvement over the past month, with the need for humanitarian assistance on the rise. He therefore expressed concern regarding the humanitarian situation over the coming winter as food insecurity and a lack of essential goods remains severe, with 6.7 million Syrians currently displaced whilst a third of them have no adequate shelter.

Each month, the UNSC holds a series of meetings aimed at discussing the situation in Syria, including the political process, humanitarian situation, and chemical weapons. At present, the Middle Eastern country is in its 10th year of unrest and conflict, causing one of the most severe humanitarian crises in history that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties, and millions of displaced people and refugees.
