Vietnam expects US to grant market economy status
VOV.VN - Politburo member and Minister of Public Security Gen. To Lam asked the US side to soon finalize the process of reviewing and recognizing/granting market economy status to Vietnam at a reception in Hanoi on March 4 for US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper.
At the meeting, Minister To Lam and Ambassador Marc Knapper expressed their joy at witnessing that bilateral relations between Vietnam and the US have been developing by leaps and bounds after nearly three decades of normalizing their relations.
They agreed on the assessment that 2024 is a pivotal year, with important significance for the two sides to carry out cooperation contents within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development in the lead-up to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations (1995-2025).
To Lam suggested the US step up cooperation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security, accelerate the early signing of the Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, the Extradition Agreement, and the Agreement on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons to create a legal framework that contributes to bolstering cooperation in the field of law enforcement between the two sides, and intensifying the fight against crime and cooperation in capacity building.
For his part, the US diplomat affirmed that the US Embassy will continue to coordinate and work closely with functional units of the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security to substantively and effectively realize the appropriate cooperation contents of mutual interest, especially those agreed upon by senior leaders under the framework of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
