Vietnam contributes to G20 success

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung returned to Hanoi on November 13, after participating the G20 Summit in Seoul, the Republic of Korea.

During the two-day event, PM Dung proposed many initiatives on global economic and development issues and creating a mecahnism for global governance that will benefit the newly-emerging and developing countries.

Mr. Dung’s participation in the Summit emphasised Vietnam’s and ASEAN’s key role and status at international forums.

On the occasion, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Doan Xuan Hung granted a VOV reporter an interview on the achievements of the Summit as well as Vietnam’s contribution.

VOV: Could you please talk about the outcomes of the G20 Summit in Seoul?

Mr. Hung: This year’s Summit reached a number of agreements on measures and policies to promote global economic recovery. An agenda for development proposed by the RoK and a long-term plan that creates favourable conditions for underdeveloped and developing countries were also adopted at the Summit.

All parties concerned agreed on reform of the global financial sector, including restructuring the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and completing the Doha talks to liberalise trade and prevent protectionism.

VOV: Prior to the Summit, there was  growing concern about the possibility of a currency war. How was the problem dealt with at the Summit?

Mr. Hung: Regarding global economic recovery, there remain problems related to global imbalance, currency, and measures to stimulate economic development. Every country sees the imbalance in a different way and tries to protect their own interests, which leads to hot debates. However, they have finally agreed to continue researching into measures to solve such problems.

In my opinion, this is a positive result that will help prevent a currency war given the fact that they join efforts to promote economic recovery for sustainable and balanced development in the future.

VOV: What were Vietnam’s contributions to the Summit, the second one in which Vietnam has participated in?

Mr. Hung: We are fully aware of our role as ASEAN chair, so we took the initiative to prepare a document on the ASEAN viewpoint on issues discussed at the G20 Summit. Vietnam actively participated in related meeting including the meetings of G20 financial ministers, deputy ministers, and foreign deputy ministers.

We also made contributions to drawing up an agenda for development in which we proposed that the G20 pay attention to the underdeveloped and developing countries, and creating better conditions for them to develop and contribute to the overall recovery of the global economy.

Prime Minister Dung also proposed a number of initiatives to deal with climate change and rising sea levels and said Vietnam is eager to share its experiences on hunger elimination, poverty reduction, food security, and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

VOV: Thank you very much.
