Vietnam condemns attacks on civilians in areas of armed conflict
VOV.VN - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted a resolution on April 27 calling for greater protection of people in conflict zones, thereby ensuring that individuals have sufficient access to necessities such as water, essential items, and medical services to survive in war zones.
The resolution, which was drafted by Vietnam, rotating president of the UNSC for April, strongly condemns attacks on civilians in armed conflict areas which have severely damaged key infrastructure facilities and harmed people's lives.
The resolution also vehemently condemns acts which serve to drive people into famine as a means of waging war. This is due to these actions going against international law with regard to the necessity of ensuring humanitarian requirements for people.
Mark Lowcock, under-secretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs, said a spate of humanitarian law violations committed against people have occurred in many countries and war zones, such as Yemen, Syria, the Tigray region in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Ukraine, and Nigeria. Indeed, these actions can be considered unacceptable and should be condemned by the wider international community, Lowcock emphasised.
Furthermore, Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), stated that the world must better protect people trapped in war zones as many of them do not have access to drinking water, electricity, or even basic medical services to treat injuries or cope with illnesses.
