Vietnam-China ties at an unprecedented historic juncture

VOV.VN - Relations between Vietnam and China are at an unprecedented historic juncture, Shi Zhongjun, Secretary-General of the ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) has said in a recent media interview in Beijing.

Shi said Vietnam and China are friendly socialist neighbours with contiguous geography, shared ideals, common beliefs and broad strategic interests. A shared orientation and a shared future are the most defining feature of bilateral ties.

With strategic direction from senior leaders of the two Parties and countries, political exchanges have reached an unprecedented level. Top leaders maintain regular and close contact, like family members visiting one another, enabling timely and in-depth exchanges on broader, strategic and directional issues in bilateral ties.

Both sides have agreed to elevate comprehensive strategic cooperation to a higher and deeper level, in line with the “six more” goals, to speed up the building of a Vietnam-

China community with a shared future of strategic significance, and to promote socialist development and growth amid profound global changes.

Following the recent “Two Sessions” in China and the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the two sides held the first ministerial-level meeting of the “3+3” strategic dialogue mechanism on diplomacy, defence and public security. The move reflects the height and strategic nature of ties between the two Parties and countries, and sends a clear signal that Vietnam and China are working together to safeguard the security of their political systems, promote national development and revitalisation, and contribute stability and positive momentum to a rapidly changing  world.

Substantive cooperation continues to expand and improve in quality, playing an increasingly visible supporting role in each side’s modernisation. Upholding mutual benefit, both sides are stepping up development integration.

Bilateral trade has reached a record high of more than US$290 billion. The two countries are also accelerating  a new western land–sea corridor, creating stronger momentum for the China–Indochina Economic Corridor. Cooperation in clean energy, the digital economy and green development is delivering concrete results, reinforcing the material foundation of the shared-future community.

People-to-people exchanges between the two countries continue on a regular basis, with flagship events such as the Vietnam–China People’s Forum, youth friendship meetings and border residents’ festivals gaining traction. A new wave of interest in learning Chinese and travelling to China is emerging, further strengthening public support for the shared-future community.

Shi said both countries are at a crucial stage in building socialism, building on past achievements and looking ahead. At this new historical starting point, he stressed that both sides should jointly follow the path charted by senior leaders of the two Parties and countries, and make new contributions to global socialism and human progress.

He added that both sides should deepen strategic trust, maintain close high-level exchanges, step up governance experience sharing, improve governance capacity, and identify pathways for Party building and national revitalisation. They should expand practical cooperation in trade and investment, infrastructure, cross-border economic cooperation zones and smart ports, and bolster cooperation in emerging fields such as technological innovation, the digital economy and artificial intelligence.

It is essential to intensify  people-to-people exchanges, organise programmes such as “red study tours” for Vietnamese youth in China, and boost closer cooperation  in culture, tourism, education and training, and healthcare, enabling  these activities to become practical and accessible to grassroots communities in both countries,  Shi emphasized.
