Vietnam, Canada hold bilateral defence consultation

VOV.VN - The Director of the Foreign Relations Department under Ministry of National Defence Major General Vu Thanh Van and Assistant Deputy Minister of Canada’s Department of National Defence Peter Hammerschmidt on July 27 co-hosted the Vietnam – Canada Bilateral Defence Consultation 2023.

The online event took place amid both nations celebrating the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties which began in 1973.

During the course of the consultation the two sides agreed that defence ties play an increasingly important role in the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership and is of interest to the leaders of the two defence ministries.

Recent times has seen defence co-operation actively implemented in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral defence co-operation signed in 2019 and the three-year bilateral defence co-operation plan for the 2021 to 2023 period.

Both sides continue to collaborate following the signed documents and agreements, with a particular focus on areas such as delegation exchange, dialogue, consultation, training, UN peacekeeping, the defence industry, and overcoming war consequences in Vietnam.

Moving forward they will continue to consult and support each other at regional and international security forums, including  the ASEAN Regional Forum, and the Shangri-La Dialogue, as a means of contributing to peace, stability, and development throughout the region and the wider world.

Also at the consultation, the two sides concurred to move ahead with working closely in preparation for the second Vietnam - Canada Defence Policy Dialogue which will be held at a deputy ministerial level in September this year.
