Vietnam can share valuable experience with regional nations: ASEAN Secretary General

VOV.VN - General Secretary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Dr. Kao Kim Hourn has expressed great appreciation for Vietnam's positivity, initiative, and responsibility for the regional bloc, stating that the nation can share plenty of valuable experience with other countries throughout the region.

The country has played a proactive and responsible role in promoting ASEAN to admit new members, thereby helping this organisation to bring together all of the continental countries and archipelagoes throughout the region and no longer being geographically divided.

Secretary General Hourn affirmed that the nation has been very proactive, not only in participating, but also actively contributing to ASEAN in many different ways, especially in terms of building a community on the three pillars of politics and security, economy, cultural, and social affairs, as well as enhancing the external relations of the bloc.

Vietnam also engages in all of the mechanisms established by ASEAN, being an active participant and playing a key role in the drafting of the ASEAN Charter to ensure that it is a guideline for the development of the ASEAN community.

Secretary General Hourn also outlined his impression of the nation’s strong economic and trade development with the signing of many bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements (FTAs).

According to him, the country has established its own position in this regional organisation and won many successes by three times holding the ASEAN Chair in 1998, 2000, and 2020.

The nation also boasts a lot of experience in terms of ASEAN’s integration activities, alternately taking on the role of co-ordinator for relations with dialogue partner countries, as well as assuming many important roles in global organisations such the UN Security Council.

Expressing his wish that the country continue to play the role of an active ASEAN member, he said that the Vietnamese side can share many valuable experience with other countries in the region in terms of boosting economic development, improving the quality of human resources, ensuring public health, disaster management, diplomacy, and promoting the participation of external partners.

This is along with continuing to support the development of the bloc in a variety of fields and community pillars, as well as the development of sub-regions, including the Mekong sub-region, he added.
