Vietnam-Cambodia friendship featured in Cambodian media

VOV.VN - Daily Cambodian newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea (Light of Cambodia) has published an article highlighting its deep friendship with Vietnam, emphasising the significance of the January 7 victory 44 years ago, along with the role of local volunteer soldiers in the liberation and revitalisation of modern Cambodia.

January 7, 1979, marked the end of a painful era for the Cambodian people under Pol Pot’s genocidal regime, with this date opening a new era of peace, national reunification, and development, the article said.

That victory underlined the extremely important role played by the Cambodian people, as well as the wise leadership of the Cambodian People's Party and current Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen. It also reflected the pure international spirit, noble sacrifice, and selfless support shown by the Vietnamese Party, State, and people for the cause of the Cambodian revolution.

The nation helped Cambodia to defeat the genocidal regime and revive itself in a long and historical process. Indeed, his assistance was especially important during the struggle against French colonialists and American imperialists, according to the article. As a result, the two countries were united in solidarity and fought together against common enemies to gain independence and freedom for their respective countries.

The author quoted President of the National Assembly (NA) of Cambodia Samdech Heng Samrin as saying that Vietnamese volunteer soldiers provided humanitarian and sincere support at a vital time in his nation’s history. In addition, Cambodian PM Hun Sen also said that without assistance from the Vietnamese soldiers, the Cambodian army and people could not have been liberated so quickly.

The two sides celebrated the 55th anniversary since the establishment of joint diplomatic relations and the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year in 2022.

Vietnamese PM Pham Minh Chinh and Cambodian PM Hun Sen also co-chaired a ceremony marking the 45th anniversary of the historic journey leading to the overthrow of Pol Pot’s genocidal regime at Koh Thmor X-16 site in Tbong Khmum province, the article said.

The event clearly demonstrates the special friendship and solidarity between both sides, as well as the international spirit of the Vietnamese people in saving the Cambodian people from Pol Pot’s regime.

After reviewing the results of co-operation between the two countries in the fields of politics, culture - society, economy - trade, security – defence, and diplomacy, the author wrote that friendly ties continue to be confederacy of long-standing traditions following the spirit of "good neighbour, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability".

Given the complicated nature of developments in the world and the region, Vietnam and Cambodia will continue to reinforce traditional friendship links and solidarity for the benefit of their people, peace, and prosperity in the region and the wider world, according to the article.
