Vietnam calls for promotion of transition in Sudan

VOV.VN - Vietnam has called for the Government and stakeholders in Sudan to promote the transition process in line with provisions in the Peace Agreement signed on October 3 of last year, including the increased participation of women and young people.

As part of his address during an online meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the Sudan situation and the operation of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) held on May 20, the local diplomat noted his appreciation of recent progress in Sudan.

The Ambassador used the platform to call on Sudan to make every effort to ensure its primary responsibility for protecting the lives of civilians and tackling the root causes of ongoing violence between communities, including boosting dialogue and making reconciliation efforts.

He went on to reaffirm Vietnamese support of the efforts being carried out by the UN Consolidated Transition Support Mission in Sudan, along with the extension of the mission's mandate to continue bolstering support for the transition process in the Northeastern African nation.

Upon reporting to the UN Security Council, Volker Perthes, the special representative for Sudan of the UN Secretary-General, outlined his great appreciation of a number of fresh developments occurring in the implementation of the Peace Agreement dated October 3 of last year between the Transitional Government of Sudan and armed groups in the Darfur region. In particular the agreement features the creation of a new cabinet and the appointment of state governors in addition to a number of representatives of various armed groups.

However, Perthes expressed concern regarding the continued economic and humanitarian difficulties facing local people and the increasing level of violence being endured by communities, especially in the Darfur region. He stressed that the UNITAMS is striving to support the transition, civilian protection efforts, and further economic development in the African country, whilst calling on the wider international community to continue supporting Sudan’s reconstruction efforts during this difficult period.

UNSC member states acknowledged the recent positive developments in Sudan, but noted that the Sudanese situation remains challenging. This is especially true amid escalating violence between communities, the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and economic and humanitarian issues.

The countries therefore requested the Government of Sudan to further promote civilian protection efforts in the Darfur region, while simultaneously reaffirming their support for the UNITAMS’ operations in terms of the transitional process.
