Vietnam calls for an end to escalating tensions in Middle East
VOV.VN - Minister Counsellor and deputy head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN Nguyen Hoang Nguyen has called on all concerned parties to exercise maximum restraint, stop hostile actions, unconditionally release all hostages, and comply with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The UN Security Council (UNSC) on April 25 continued its open debate on the situation in the Middle East and Palestine under the chairmanship of Malta’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ian Borg.
Those in attendance at the debate included the UN Secretary General, many ministers and diplomatic officials of UNSC member countries, and more than 50 other UN member nations.
In his opening remarks, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned of the risk of widespread conflict breaking out in the Middle East amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza becoming increasingly serious.
He said that failure to promote a two-state solution would further increase instability and threaten hundreds of millions of people in the region. Most countries have expressed concern about the risk of escalating conflicts.
The UN chief called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and end the cycle of violence and retaliation against each other. Many countries expressed disappointment that the UN Security Council on April 18 was unable to pass a draft resolution on admitting Palestine as an official member of the organisation.
In his speech, Minister Counsellor and deputy head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN Nguyen Hoang Nguyen expressed deep concern about the growing tension in the Middle East, while affirming that Vietnam opposes all acts of intimidation or use of force, violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country, as well as going against international law and the UN Charter.
The Vietnamese side strongly condemns all forms of violence against civilians and civilian infrastructure, as well as recent attacks against commercial vessels on international maritime routes.
The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed that the nation backs all reconciliation efforts towards a sustainable, long-term solution to the ongoing conflict and the Middle East peace process on the basis of a two-state solution.
The nation highlights the key role of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in performing the humanitarian relief mission in Gaza, Ambassador Nguyen said, while emphasizing that Vietnam strongly supports the legitimate aspirations of the State of Palestine to soon become an official member of the UN.
