Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal to make state visit to Vietnam
VOV.VN - Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Haji Hassanal will pay a state visit to Vietnam from November 30 to December 2 at the invitation of State President Luong Cuong, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The visit reaffirms the determination of both countries to continuously strengthen and deepen their friendship and cooperation across all sectors, following the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Partnership in 2019.
During the visit, both sides will review and assess the implementation of cooperation under the Action Programme for the Comprehensive Partnership 2023–2027, adopted during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Brunei in February 2023. The visit also provides an opportunity to discuss measures to strengthen cooperation in key priority areas such as political-diplomatic relations, defence-security, energy, Halal industry, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and other areas of mutual interest.
Vietnam and Brunei established diplomatic relations in 1992, and the two countries lifted their ties to Comprehensive Partnership in 2019, creating a premise for the bilateral relationship to develop more deeply and substantially.
Since the elevation to a Comprehensive Partnership, Vietnam and Brunei have actively promoted cooperation in all fields. Political-diplomatic relations have been reinforced through high-level visits and exchanges. Recently, on October 31, President Luong Cuong met with Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit 2025 in Gyeongju, the Republic of Korea.
The Joint Committee on Bilateral Cooperation, co-chaired by the two foreign ministers, plays a crucial role in reviewing and promoting effective and substantive cooperation.
Economic cooperation has achieved significant progress. Bilateral trade from 2023–2025 exceeded the target of US$500 million, reaching over US$670 million in 2024.
Defence-security cooperation has also recorded positive results through the implementation of memoranda of understanding, official visits, and bilateral dialogues. Education and people-to-people exchanges play a significant role in strengthening bilateral friendship, with Vietnamese being the only Southeast Asian language taught at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
Both countries also have potential for cooperation in renewable energy transition, green economy, and circular economy, aligned with their commitment to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Digital economy, science and technology, and innovation are promising fields for collaboration, especially as Brunei implements “Brunei Vision 2035” to develop a smart nation.
Vietnam and Brunei have opportunities to cooperate in emerging sectors linked to innovation and technology, such as connecting startup ecosystems, high-tech agriculture, eco-tourism, and training high-quality human resources.
