This was the board’s first session of 2025 with a focus on improving operational efficiency and shaping the 2026-2029 Strategic Plan.
The meeting took place as the UN prepares to commemorate key milestones: 30 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995), 20 years since the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security, and 15 years since the establishment of UN Women.
During the session, countries acknowledged that despite progress, significant challenges remain in protecting women's rights and advancing gender equality. Women in many parts of the world continue to be affected by conflicts and humanitarian crises, face violence and discrimination, and bear disproportionate impacts of climate change and social injustice. At the same time, resources for gender-related initiatives are increasingly constrained, and progress on the 2030 Agenda has fallen behind schedule.
Speaking at the discussion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang emphasized that this session is a crucial opportunity for member states and the UN to assess achievements, draw key lessons, and develop timely and effective solutions to ongoing challenges, while also sharing priorities for advancing gender equality worldwide.
He noted that in an era of rapid scientific and technological advancements, where innovation plays a pivotal role in human development, it is essential to expand women's participation and contributions in these fields. This can be done by promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education for girls and creating a global framework to connect women in STEM across different regions.
More effective resource allocation for critical sectors such as healthcare and education, gender impact assessments, clear and measurable targets, and greater transparency in budget spending will contribute to remarkable improvements.
The Vietnamese diplomat also accentuated the importance of targeted measures such as setting quotas for women’s participation, leadership training programs, and policies that support work-life balance, all of which are essential for enabling women to take on greater roles in policymaking and decision-making.
On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang applauded Vietnam’s efforts and achievements in promoting gender equality, particularly its high proportion of female National Assembly deputies and women scientists, as well as its early adoption of the National Strategy on Gender Equality for 2020-2031.
Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with UN Women and fellow Executive Board members to contribute to global efforts in promoting gender equality, accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ensuring that no one is left behind.
The UN Women Executive Board comprises 41 member states elected based on geographic representation. It is responsible for overseeing and guiding the organization’s activities.
As a key policymaking body, the board plays a vital role in advancing global gender equality, empowering women and girls, and supporting member states in achieving gender-related sustainable development goals. Vietnam was elected to the UN Women Executive Board for the 2025-2027 term and officially assumed its role on January 1, 2025.
