Uzbekistan-Vietnam Friendship Association President expresses confidence in growing ties

VOV.VN - On April 1, Alisher Rustamovich Mukhamedov, President of the Uzbekistan-Vietnam Friendship Association, shared his expectations for the bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Vietnam on the occasion of Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man’s visit to attend the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-150) and his official visit to the Republic of Uzbekistan.

According to Mukhamedov, this visit marks an important step in diplomatic relations between the two countries, especially as it is the first time the top Vietnamese legislator has visited Uzbekistan.

He emphasized that this visit will open up plenty of opportunities to strengthen political, diplomatic, trade, investment, and cultural exchanges. At the same time, he also mentioned that both sides need to expand the legal framework to augment cooperation in a variety of fields. He highlighted the need to enhance the effectiveness of the Uzbekistan-Vietnam Intergovernmental Committee on trade, economic, and scientific-technical cooperation.

Mukhamedov affirmed that over the past 30 years, the relationship between Uzbekistan and Vietnam has consistently developed in the direction of friendship and cooperation. Uzbekistan is currently intensifying its economic activities with Vietnam, considering this a foundation for sound political relations. Areas such as trade, investment, science and technology, and education all boast great potential for development. In particular, Uzbekistan is keen to expand its relations with ASEAN, with Vietnam playing an important role in this regard.

Recalling key milestones that have shaped the development of relations between the two countries,  Mukhamedov mentioned the historic visit of President Ho Chi Minh to Uzbekistan in 1959. He shared that the vivid image of President Ho remains in the memories of the people of Uzbekistan.

He believes that Uzbekistan and Vietnam share a long historical bond, with the people of both countries considering each other as brothers. Over 3,500 Vietnamese students have studied at educational institutions in Uzbekistan and are seen as true friends of Uzbekistan. According to him, these individuals are the bridges between the two nations, the first and most important people-to-people diplomats, who have helped develop and reinforce the friendly relationship between Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Alongside official diplomatic activities, greater attention is given to people-to-people cooperation as many cultural events have been organized to deepen mutual understanding and exchanges. The friendship associations of both countries regularly participate in international cultural and artistic activities, support Vietnamese students in Uzbekistan, and organize numerous cultural exchange programs, he went on.

He also accentuated the huge the potential for developing bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Vietnam is vast. First and foremost, there is great potential in trade and economics, stated, adding that Vietnam is an important traditional partner of Uzbekistan in the Asia-Pacific region. In recent years, relations at various levels have been strengthened, with the volume of bilateral trade and the number of joint ventures increasing. Projects in agriculture and aquaculture are being implemented.

He believes that the two countries can promote bilateral trade in many areas, including agriculture, oil and gas, garments and textiles, food processing, and tourism. Vietnam is becoming a preferred destination for Uzbek tourists, while Uzbekistan also attracts Vietnamese visitors with its famous historical sites.

With promising prospects, Mukhamedov expressed his confidence that the visit of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man will add fresh impetus to the development of the friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Uzbekistan in the future.
