US public opinion warm to comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam

VOV.VN - US President Joe Biden’s ongoing State visit is viewed as a historic event in diplomatic relations between the two countries, with both sides deciding to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, co-operation, and sustainable development.

The upgrading of ties with the Vietnamese side has captured the attention of the media and public opinion in the US.

Chuck Hagel, former US Secretary of Defence, said that both sides raising their bilateral relationship to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, co-operation, and development is good news, not only for the two countries, but also for the whole region.

According to Hagel, if the two countries continue and develop this relationship within the next decade, it will bring additional economic benefits to both countries as there will be more exchange programmes for students and young people. Both nations will understand each other better, whilst there will be additional opportunities for both sides.

Meanwhile, according to Andrew Wells Dang, a senior expert on Vietnam at the Centre for Asian Affairs of the US Institute of Peace (USIP), the two sides upgrading their relationship is an opportunity for both to become closer together.

This will be an opportunity for the future, an opportunity to bring policies of both nations closer to each other and closer to their ideals. President Biden emphasized co-operation with allies and partners around the world, including more co-operative relations with Vietnam, he said.

This is also how the US engages with Southeast Asia more strongly. In addition to the Vietnamese side, the US will continue to promote linkages with Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand. For the US, elevating relations is also a way to change what we think about Vietnam. The relationship between the two countries will be closer, and the nation will be one of America's priority countries for co-operation with in Asia.

President Biden's visit to Vietnam has received great attention and wide coverage from sections of the US media. According to the Washington Post, President Biden has brought the US closer to Vietnam through upgrading relations in a way which will connect the two countries diplomatically in a more open way.

The newspaper also quoted US officials as saying that Vietnam represents an important relationship for the US and the two sides will continue to strive to strengthen this relationship.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal said that the US has entered a new and enhanced diplomatic partnership with the Vietnamese side.

The newspaper also stated that the US has pledged a series of initiatives through which investments in trade and high-level contacts between the two countries are also expected to take place more frequently.
