UNDP official’s contributions to national socio-economic development
VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam has applauded Caitlin Wiesen, outgoing resident representative of the UN’s Development Programme (UNDP), for her initiatives and contributions which have supported the country in growing socio-economic development and improving international integration.
During a reception held on August 26 in Hanoi for the UN official, Deputy PM Dam expressed his joy at the fruitful co-operation between the nation and the UN over recent decades, affirming that the Vietnamese Government highly values the role played by the UNDP in supporting development worldwide.
He also praised Wiesen for her support in helping the nation improve its role and position in the international arena, thereby further bolstering its co-operation relations with the UN and the UNDP in particular.
According to the Vietnamese leader, the UNDP and Wiesen personally actively promoted the support of medical equipment and supplies for the country during its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Indeed, this includes prompt reports made on the socio-economic impacts caused by the health crisis on poor households in Vietnam, as well as proposing measures for and supporting Vietnamese ministries and sectors in building policies to swiftly respond to the pandemic and speeding up socio-economic recovery.
The Vietnamese leader was also appreciative of the UNDP’s assistance for Vietnam in accelerating the country's administrative reform and green and inclusive economic recovery, unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, and facilitating women to join UN peacekeeping operations.
Deputy PM Dam expressed his hope that the UNDP will continue to help the country in improving its readiness to respond to future diseases, along with reviewing and speeding up the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is in addition to sharing experience and good global practices with the Southeast Asian nation on solving socio-economic impacts on vulnerable groups during its green transition scheme.
The Deputy PM went on to suggest that the UNDP strive to enhance technical support for Vietnam in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing resilience and the adaptive capacity of communities, economic sectors, and ecosystems.
In response, Wiesen promised to make more practical contributions to co-operation relations between the country and the UNDP in the framework of the Vietnam – UNDP Country Programme for the 2022 to 2026 period. This aims to help the nation promote circular economy and multidimensional poverty reduction, respond to climate change, strengthen resilience to natural disasters, and ensure environmental sustainability.
