NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man begins official visit to Armenia

VOV.VN - National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man, accompanied by his spouse Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga and a high-ranking NA delegation, arrived in Yerevan at 9:00 p.m. (local time) on April 1, starting an official visit to the Republic of Armenia at the invitation of President of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan.

Among those welcoming the delegation at Zvartnots airport in Yerevan were Vice President of the National Assembly of Armenia Hakob Arshakyan, Armenian Ambassador to Vietnam Suren Baghdasaryan, Head of the Armenia-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group Hasmik Hakobyan, leaders from the Armenian NA’s Foreign Affairs and Protocol Departments, as well as Vietnamese Ambassador to Russia and concurrently to Armenia Dang Minh Khoi, along with officials and staff from the Vietnamese Embassy.

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Armenia has continued to see positive development. In terms of politics and diplomacy, Armenia regards Vietnam as an important partner in Southeast Asia.

The two nations maintain delegation exchanges and contacts at various levels, including high-level meetings. Notable recent exchanges include the meeting between Party General Secretary To Lam and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the Francophonie Summit in 2024 and the official visit to Vietnam by Armenian NA President Alen Simonyan. The two countries have also coordinated and offered mutual support each other at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and the Francophonie Community.

Bilateral parliamentary cooperation has been steadily maintained, particularly following the Armenian NA President’s visit to Vietnam. Previously, exchanges primarily took place on the sidelines of multilateral conferences and forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and the Francophone Parliamentary Assembly (APF). In 2021, the Armenian NA established the Armenia-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group.

Economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two nations has been actively intensified in recent years, especially after the Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Free Trade Agreement came into effect in 2016. Bilateral trade turnover reached US$342 million in 2023 and is projected to approach US$500 million in 2024.

During the visit, NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man is scheduled to hold talks and meetings with top Armenian leaders, meet with the Head of the Armenia-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group, attend the Armenia-Vietnam Business Forum, and visit various cultural and economic establishments.

The official visit to Armenia reaffirms Vietnam’s consistent policy of valuing and boosting ties with traditional friends, including Armenia. It also aims to explore measures to augment cooperation between the two legislative bodies and promote a conducive environment for expanding bilateral co-operation, particularly in the fields of economics, trade, investment, education, training, and culture.
