Top leader’s working trip to US affirms Vietnamese foreign policy of independence and self-reliance
VOV.VN - The upcoming trip to attend the UN Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79), and holding working sessions in the United States by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee and State President To Lam holds great significance as it provides an opportunity to affirm the Vietnamese foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism, and diversification of international relations.
The statement was made by Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung ahead of the working visit.
The working visit coincides with the first anniversary of the two countries' comprehensive strategic partnership, coming as both sides are preparing for the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025.
Therefore, it gives an important opportunity for both nations to look back on the journey they have travelled, as well as exchanging views on the good experience and lessons on mutual relations among nations.
As the US is preparing for its election and will soon see a transfer of its leadership, the outcomes of General Secretary and State Present To Lam’s trip will help to both maintain and consolidate the development momentum in Vietnam-US ties over the coming years, whilst also contributing to promoting peace, co-operation, and progress in the region and throughout the world, Ambassador Dung emphasized.
General Secretary and State Present To Lam will have a busy working agenda in the US, with the event featuring a series of meetings and interactions with leaders, friends in the US administration, the business community, scholars, and overseas Vietnamese.
Most notably, the top Vietnamese leader will chair an event marking one year of the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, co-operation, and sustainable development, whilst looking towards the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic ties.
He will also deliver an important policy speech at Columbia University. Additionally, many members of his entourage will engage in bilateral activities with US partners during the course of the visit.
Regarding mutual ties, the diplomat stated that following over one year since both sides upgraded their partnership to that of a comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, co-operation, and sustainable development, their agencies have actively promoted ties across all 10 pillars of the new relationship framework. This is along with making sustained efforts to narrow differences and to enhance mutual understanding.
Key areas of collaboration, such as politics and diplomacy, trade and investment, science and technology, education and training, defence and security, and people-to-people exchanges have increasingly deepened and become both more effective and substantive.
The US continues to allocate resources in support of the Vietnamese side in prioritized areas such as dealing with the consequences of war, energy transition, and responding to epidemics. It has also swiftly shared assistance with the Government and people of Vietnam during difficult times, such as settling the aftermath of typhoon Yagi.
Noting that there remain a lot of difficulties and challenges ahead, the Ambassador expressed his firm belief that with the results achieved, significant potential, and determination of both sides, the bilateral relationship is on the right track and will achieve many positive milestones over the next 30 years and beyond. Indeed, this will meet the interests of the two peoples as a contribution to promoting peace, co-operation, and common progress worldwide.
