Top Chinese leader's first trip abroad in 2025 marks 75 years of ties with Vietnam

VOV.VN - Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping’s visit to Vietnam, his first overseas trip in 2025, marks a new chapter in deepening bilateral ties as the two countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

The State visit to Vietnam from April 14 to 15, made at the invitation of Party General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong, is Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping’s first overseas trip in 2025.

This visit comes less than a year after Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam’s State visit to China in August 2024. It also marks Xi Jinping’s fourth visit to Vietnam as China’s top leader, and the second visit during his current term-the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Previously, Xi visited Vietnam as General Secretary and President of China in 2015, 2017, and 2023. He also made a visit in 2011 as China’s Vice President. Altogether, Xi has visited Vietnam five times in various capacities.

This latest trip takes place as relations between the two Parties and two States continue to develop in a positive and substantive direction. It also takes place at a significant milestone as 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and China (January 18, 1950 – January 18, 2025) and is designated as the Year of Vietnam–China Humanistic Exchange.

“This State visit to Vietnam by General Secretary and President Xi Jinping is a major political and diplomatic event for both Parties and States. It holds strategic significance and a long-lasting impact on the development of Vietnam–China relations, especially as both nations enter a new era,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son emphasized.

During the visit, Xi is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Party General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong, and meet with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man. The leaders will discuss major orientations and concrete measures to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across key areas. Xi will also attend several other important diplomatic events.

“The State visit to Vietnam by General Secretary and President Xi Jinping is highly valued by both sides and has been meticulously arranged in terms of schedule and content,” said Vietnamese Ambassador to China Pham Thanh Binh.

During the visit, the two sides will exchange updates on each Party and country's current situation and conduct in-depth discussions on deepening bilateral ties. This includes maintaining the tradition of frequent high-level exchanges, further consolidating political trust, effectively implementing high-level common perceptions and signed agreements, and advancing cooperation under the “Six Orientations” framework. The goal is to achieve more practical results and new highlights in substantive cooperation.

An estimated 40 cooperation documents across multiple areas are expected to be signed between Vietnamese and Chinese ministries, agencies, and localities during the visit, laying a solid foundation for more effective co-operation in the time ahead.
