Three Vietnamese officers dispatched to UN peacekeeping missions
VOV.VN - The Ministry of National Defence held a ceremony on April 8 to present the President’s decision to send three military officers to the UN peacekeeping missions in the Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Abyei.
Of the five officers, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Sy Hieu will be sent to the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) to undertake duties as a military observer.
Meanwhile, Major Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan will take on the duty as logistics staff officer at the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), with Lieutenant Nguyen Tien Long working as a military observer at the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen Hoang Xuan Chien, who is also head of the ministry’s steering committee for the participation in the UN peacekeeping operations asked the three officers to swiftly grasp the situation in their respective areas, fulfil their assigned tasks, and improve their situation analysis and forecasting capacity.
They were also required to strictly comply with the Party, State and army’s foreign policy, regulations of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) and the UN as well as laws of the host countries, thereby promoting the image of the country, people, and army in the international arena.
According to Colonel Mac Duc Trong, deputy head of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the country has so far dispatched a total of 799 officers and staff members both individually and as units, to UN peacekeeping missions and headquarters.
