Tanzania Speaker sees Vietnam’s Doi Moi as model for development
VOV.VN - Tanzania’s National Assembly Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu has described Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements after 40 years of Doi Moi (Renewal) as a model Tanzania can draw on as it implements its Tanzania Development Vision 2050.
Receiving Vice President of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Hong Dien in Tanzania on October 7 on the sidelines of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-153), Zungu expressed admiration for the Vietnamese people’s spirit and determination during their struggle for national independence and the country’s subsequent development.
He highlighted Vietnam’s achievements during four decades of Doi Moi (Renewal), viewing the experience as a useful reference for Tanzania’s long-term development efforts under Tanzania Development Vision 2050.
The Tanzanian leader also affirmed that the National Assembly of Tanzania would continue nurturing the traditional friendship between the two countries and promoting closer ties.
He called for a stronger role for the two legislatures in improving the legal framework for bilateral cooperation, overseeing the implementation of signed agreements and serving as an effective channel for mediating and addressing difficulties that arise in bilateral relations.
Zungu also praised the performance of Halotel, Viettel Group’s telecommunications business in Tanzania, and welcomed greater investment by Vietnamese businesses in agriculture, tourism, mining, technology and infrastructure.
For his part, National Assembly Vice President Nguyen Hong Dien congratulated the National Assembly of Tanzania on the successful organisation of IPU-153 and its efforts, as host of the assembly, to advance the role of parliaments and inter-parliamentary cooperation in promoting peace, fairness, justice and development.
He conveyed greetings and an invitation to visit Vietnam from National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man to Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu.
Dien expressed appreciation for Tanzania’s valuable support for Vietnam during its struggle for national independence and reaffirmed Vietnam’s importance attached to its traditional friendship with Tanzania.
He proposed stronger high-level exchanges through Party, parliamentary, government and people-to-people channels, with parliamentary cooperation becoming an important pillar of bilateral relations.
The Vietnamese official suggested expanding exchanges between parliamentary committees and legislators, sharing experience in lawmaking and oversight, and considering a memorandum of understanding between the two parliaments.
He also called for efforts to advance negotiations on key bilateral agreements, including an agreement on the avoidance of double taxation and an agreement on the promotion and protection of investment, to provide a stronger legal foundation for trade and investment.
Economic cooperation between the two countries has made positive progress but remains below its potential, Dien said, urging Tanzania to support Vietnamese businesses, including Halotel, in participating in telecommunications, infrastructure, digital transformation and e-government projects.
He also underlined the importance of a stable and open legal framework for businesses from both countries to expand cooperation in promising areas such as mining, energy, high-tech agriculture and infrastructure.
The two sides agreed to maintain coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums and international organisations, including the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement and the IPU.
Tanzania also affirmed its support for Vietnam in strengthening substantive cooperation with the African Union (AU) and the East African Community (EAC).
The meeting took place as Vietnam and Tanzania sought to build on their longstanding political ties and translate them into broader parliamentary, economic and investment cooperation.
