Cultural diplomacy expands Vietnam-Tanzania cooperation space

Fulfilling the pioneering role of foreign service in national development stands as a primary focus of the 33rd Diplomatic Conference. In Tanzania, the embassy is simultaneously advancing political, economic, and cultural activities to solidify bilateral ties and broaden connections with East Africa, creating room for cooperation among Vietnamese enterprises and localities.

Bridge for cooperation

According Ambassador Vu Thanh Huyen,  in the country's new development phase, overseas diplomatic missions must act as a frontline force protecting national interests, mobilizing external resources, and promoting Vietnam’s image.

"Entering a new era of national rise, Vietnam's overseas representation missions serve as sensitive antenna stations and frontline forces on the diplomatic front," Huyen emphasizes.

To fulfill this role, missions must execute three core functions: providing strategic advice in political diplomacy; attracting development resources through economic diplomacy; and spreading Vietnamese identity through cultural diplomacy tied to community affairs and citizen protection.

The ambassador notes that cultural diplomacy serves as an essential channel to build mutual understanding and trust. Apart from promoting the image of an innovative, self-reliant, and culturally rich nation, community work and citizen protection help reinforce national unity and connect overseas Vietnamese resources to serve national development.

In Tanzania, the embassy is enhancing cultural and educational exchanges while exploring digital platforms to share Vietnam's image. Efforts also focus on connecting universities and research institutes between both nations, expanding training cooperation, scholarship exchanges, and human resource development in high-tech agriculture, information technology, and healthcare.

"Regarding cultural and educational diplomacy, the strategy involves combining cultural promotion via digital infrastructure with educational cooperation and human resource training," Huyen says.

Investing in education and knowledge transfer yields practical benefits and helps foster international friends attached to Vietnam, elevating the nation's standing in East Africa, the ambassador adds.

Parallel to cultural diplomacy, political relations remain a top priority. A major focus is coordinating with Vietnamese and Tanzanian agencies to prepare for the official visit to Vietnam by Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, at the invitation of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam.

The visit is expected to mark a new milestone in bilateral relations, consolidating political trust and expanding cooperation across multiple fields.

Proactive economic diplomacy

Ambassador Huyen states that Tanzania and East Africa offer new potential for Vietnamese businesses. The embassy focuses on boosting bilateral cooperation mechanisms, preparing for the second meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee, and connecting enterprises in high-potential sectors.

Bilateral trade maintains growth momentum due to economic complementarity. Tanzania serves as a key supplier of raw cashew nuts to Vietnam, while the East African market shows growing interest in Vietnamese technological goods, electronics, and consumer products. The embassy is also stepping up South-South agricultural cooperation and tech transfers in crop production and aquaculture.

Amid global economic shifts, Huyen stresses that diplomatic missions must innovate their approach to economic diplomacy.

"Amid these complex shifts, economic diplomacy cannot follow routine paths," Huyen emphasizes. "Every Vietnamese mission abroad should transform its mindset and operational methods, shifting from passive support to proactive creation and partnership with businesses."

Accordingly, the embassy positions Tanzania as a gateway for Vietnamese firms to access East Africa, actively seeking partners and engaging with Tanzanian ministries, business associations, and local authorities rather than waiting for domestic requests.

The embassy also assists with partner verification, legal advisory, risk management, and digital trade promotion, helping businesses access market data with reduced costs and time.

New milestones in bilateral ties

Ambassador Huyen expresses confidence that Vietnam-Tanzania relations will enter a stronger development phase built on traditional friendship, political trust, and economic complementarity.

Key goals for the embassy's term include supporting the upcoming official visit of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the invitation of Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, expanding comprehensive cooperation and delivering practical results.

The embassy continues to support Vietnamese businesses establishing value chains and logistics hubs in Tanzania, reinforcing Vietnam’s role as an economic partner in East Africa.

In people-to-people exchanges, the mission plans to push up agricultural and educational partnerships, building a network of young Tanzanians connected to Vietnam to share the image of a responsible, friendly, and culturally rich nation.

"The embassy is determined to advance bilateral relations between Vietnam and Tanzania, as well as multi-tiered cooperation with East Africa, matching the potential of all sides and contributing to the country's development," Huyen affirms.

This goal guides the entire staff at the Vietnamese Embassy in Tanzania as they uphold the pioneering role of diplomacy, broaden ties with East Africa, and leverage external resources for national development.
