Spanish media highlight PM Pedro Sánchez’s recognition of Vietnam’s global stature
VOV.VN - During his historic visit to Hanoi from April 8 to 10, which marked the first time a Spanish Prime Minister had visited Vietnam since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1977, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed deep appreciation for Vietnam’s growing international standing.

According to Spanish news agency Europa Press, PM Sánchez stressed that Vietnam is a major power in Asia with an increasingly prominent role on the global stage. Fifty years after national reunification, the country has maintained stable and robust economic growth, averaging around 6% annually over the past two decades. The Spanish leader described this as an impressive achievement.
At a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Sánchez reaffirmed that Spain and the European Union are committed to a rules-based international trading system, supporting trade liberalisation and economic openness. He said Spain is developing a new foreign policy strategy aimed at strengthening ties with dynamic and important countries like Vietnam.
The visit yielded tangible outcomes, most notably a Joint Statement on elevating bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a milestone following 47 years of cooperation. Accompanying agreements covered food security, political consultation, and diplomacy, outlining a diverse cooperation agenda for the next decade. In particular, a new financial protocol on infrastructure development is expected to create plenty of opportunities for Spanish businesses to engage in key projects in Vietnam.
Looking ahead, Madrid is working on a Southeast Asia-focused strategy in which Vietnam is identified as a key partner in the EU’s Indo-Pacific policy. PM Sánchez expressed a strong desire to deepen cooperation with Vietnam at multilateral forums and affirmed that Vietnam’s strong economic growth serves as an inspiring example for the global community in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals.
