Vietnam wishes to deepen cooperation in all areas with Spain, says Party leader

VOV.VN - Vietnam wishes to deepen cooperation in all areas with Spain, an important member of the European Union, Party General Secretary To Lam told Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez during a meeting in Hanoi on April 9.

To Lam welcomed Sanchez’s visit which he said would create momentum to elevate the Vietnam-Spain Strategic Partnership to new heights, for the prosperity and benefits of the people of both countries, and for peace, cooperation, and development in the region and the world at large.

Sanchez for his part spoke highly of Vietnam’s role and position globally, and affirmed that Spain is ready to be a bridge to further promote Vietnam-EU relations. He emphasised Spain’s desire to upgrade the two countries’ relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership in the future.

To Lam shared his guest’s assessments about the global economic situation and affirmed that Vietnam pursues a policy of self-reliance and expects to weather the storm through market diversification with regions around the world, such as the EU and Africa. He said Vietnam will further promote the development and application of science and technology, and enhance trade exchanges with partner countries and traditional friends, including Spain.

He emphasised the strengthening of cooperation in the fields of science and technology and transportation – the areas where Spain has strengths and Vietnam has needs, and said cultural and tourism cooperation between the two countries holds great potential, especially with the increasing number of Spanish tourists visiting Vietnam.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Prime Minister highlighted similarities and complementary aspects between the two dynamic economies, and affirmed that Spain would encourage other EU countries to quickly ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).

He suggested that Vietnam send a delegation to Spain to exchange and learn from experiences in order to advocate for the European Commission to soon remove the 'yellow card' on Vietnam's seafood exports to the bloc.

As the country with the second-largest high-speed rail system in the world, the Spanish Prime Minister shared that Spanish companies are eager to engage in infrastructure and railway projects to contribute to the modernization and dynamic development efforts in Vietnam.

Both host and guest agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as defence-security, agriculture, education and training, while also expanding collaboration into potential fields like innovation, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and digital transformation.

On this occasion, To Lam urged the Government of Spain to continue creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to stabilize their lives and integrate well, so that they can make practical contributions to the socio-economic development of the host country and the traditional friendship between the two countries.

The Spanish Prime Minister praised Vietnam’s efforts in contributing to solving global issues and welcomed its hosting of the Partnering for Green Growth (P4G) Summit in April 2025, affirming that Spain would send a representative to the summit.

Both sides emphasized that Vietnam and Spain should continue to closely coordinate at multilateral forums and international organizations, promote multilateralism, and uphold international law to address regional and global challenges, especially in the context of rapid and complex global changes, including the East Sea issue.
