Singapore to raise total number of VSIPs in Vietnam to 30 by 2026
VOV.VN - Singapore is set to increase the number of Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) in Vietnam to 30 by 2026, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said during phone talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Le Minh Hung on April 16.
Lawrence Wong congratulated Le Minh Hung on his election as Prime Minister for the 2026-2031 term and said he looks forward to working closely with him to further develop the Vietnam-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Thanking Lawrence Wong for his congratulatory letter and phone call, PM Hung said Vietnam will soon issue new policies to attract more foreign investment, including from Singaporean investors. He called on Singapore to support Vietnam in developing international financial centres and to expand and upgrade the network of next-generation VSIP linked with high-tech transfer.
Lawrence Wong agreed with PM Hung’s assessments and proposals, said Singapore greatly values its relationship with Vietnam and is ready to carry out agreed cooperation. He underlined the need to increase high-level exchanges and cooperation in economy, defence and security, as well as other areas, contributing to peace, stability and development in the region.
He said the plan to expand VSIPs marks the 30th anniversary of the project in Vietnam. He also pledged continued support for Vietnam in training and developing human resources, especially strategic-level officials, through new training agreements and expansion of the Singapore Cooperation Programme to Vietnamese localities. He expressed confidence that bilateral ties will continue to grow and hopes to make breakthroughs in areas such as carbon credit exchange and food security.
The two PM agreed to continue consolidating political trust, intensify delegation exchanges and high-level contacts at all levels, and maintain existing cooperation mechanisms, including the annual exchange mechanism between the two PMs. They consented to soon implement a strategic dialogue mechanism between the two ruling parties in 2026 and to cooperate in ensuring energy security.
Both sides also affirmed that they will prioritise resources to implement the Action Programme on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for 2025-2030. They agreed on the possibility of signing an intergovernmental agreement on cross-border trade in low-carbon electricity, creating a legal framework to ensure the successful implementation of a project to export wind power from Vietnam to Singapore.
In the context of a complex international situation, the Vietnamese Government chief called for stronger ASEAN cooperation and close coordination in 2027 when Singapore will chair ASEAN and Vietnam will host APEC.
He also proposed stronger cooperation in defence and security, combating transnational crime, and support the development, operation and management of a National Data Centre and a High-Performance Computing Centre, as well as artificial intelligence, and accelerate negotiations on an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the South China Sea.
On this occasion, Lawrence Wong invited PM Le Minh Hung to pay an official visit to Singapore.
