Knapper has been named among nine nominations for various ambassador positions abroad, including in Vietnam.

He is currently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Korea and Japan Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the US Department of State.

His previous diplomatic experience has come at numerous US embassies in the Republic of Korea, Japan, India, and Iraq. Most notably, he can also speak Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese.

Alongside the nomination of Knapper, President Biden's nominee list also includes candidates to ambassadorial positions in Somalia, Algeria, Bahrain, Lesotho, Cameroon, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, and Congo.

According to CNN, this marks the first US ambassador nomination since President Biden took office on January 20. Those who have made the list of nominees have plenty of years of experience working at the US Department of State.

Currently, US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink is due to shortly end his term and has subsequently been nominated by President Biden to the role of Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific.

Ambassador Kritenbrink had previously been designated by former President Donald Trump as US ambassador to Vietnam in July, 2017, with his term beginning in November, 2017.
