PM’s trips gives added impetus to relations with Brazil and Dominican Republic

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s trip to Brazil, his attendance at the G20 Summit, and his official visit to the Dominican Republic were a great success, indicating Vietnam's role, reputation, and responsible contributions to global issues, as well as providing fresh impetus to further enhance bilateral ties between Vietnam and the two Latin American nations.

The statement was made by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Thanh Binh in a recent media interview.

Deputy Minister Binh hailed the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation’s contributions to the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, saying that PM Chinh and his entourage had actively engaged in all official activities during the meeting.

Vietnam makes positive contributions to G20 Summit

The PM delivered two important speeches at debates themed “The fight against poverty" and "Sustainable development and energy transition". He also engaged in a total of 35 bilateral meetings with leaders of nations and international organisations on the sidelines of the summit.

These intensive, proactive, and effective activities vividly portrayed the nation as being a dynamic, open country that is "a friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community", thereby contributing to the overall success of the G20 Summit 2024.

Deputy Minister Binh said that Vietnamese participation in and contributions to this summit conveyed three key messages.

Firstly, the nation is an independent, confident, and self-reliant country. PM Chinh underlined the importance of people-centred, comprehensive, and global approaches to promote peace and stability as a foundation for poverty eradication, sustainable development, and energy transition, conveying a strong message about the country’s readiness to contribute to global efforts with its capabilities, experience, and long-term vision.

Secondly, Vietnam can be seen as a reliable multilateral partner. PM Chinh underscored the importance of multilateralism and international solidarity. He also emphasized the idea of putting people at the centre, as the subject, the goal, the driving force, and the important resource for sustainable development moving forward, thereby affirming that with this approach, Vietnam stands ready to collaborate with the G20 and the international community in pursuing the noble goal of building a better world.

Thirdly, the country is a highly responsible member of the international community, actively contributing to global efforts. Vietnamese participation serves as a founding member of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, initiated by the host nation Brazil, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to sharing its experience in poverty alleviation, which in turn has enabled it to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals a decade ahead of schedule.

On this occasion, PM Chinh responded to the G20 members' call for action on global institutional reform to build a fairer global institution, rapidly adapt to world fluctuations, and enhance the representation of developing countries.

Vietnam seeks stronger ties with Brazil and Dominican Republic

The Deputy FM also hailed the significance of the talks between PM Chinh and Brazilian President Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as well as the joint statement made on elevating the bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership between both sides.

The talks gave a chance for both parties to review the fruitful development of the friendship and co-operation, as well as the implementation of high-level agreements reached during PM Chinh’s official visit to Brazil in September, 2023, thus agreeing on major orientations and measures in a bid to further foster bilateral relations in the future, Deputy Minister Binh said.

The elevation of the Vietnam-Brazil relations to the Strategic Partnership holds particularly significant importance, he stressed.

It reaffirms the high level of political trust between the two countries, demonstrating the two governments' determination to further expand avenues for co-operation, towards fostering deeper, more substantive, stable, and sustainable relations, thereby bringing tangible benefits to their people whilst contributing to peace, stability, and development in their respective regions, and the world.

The establishment of the Strategic Partnership with Brazil marks a significant milestone in Vietnamese efforts to expand co-operation with Latin America - a region which boasts immense potential, especially as Vietnam intensifies diversification of markets and supply sources.

The new framework of relations will serve as a foundation for close ties between Vietnam and Brazil on international issues such as poverty alleviation, sustainable development, climate change response, and pushing ties between ASEAN and South America. It also stands as a strong testament to Vietnamese commitments to deepening relations with global partners while affirming its increasingly elevated position within the international community, the official said.

The PM’s attendance at a series of meaningful activities in Brazil clearly show the nation’s desire to advance its relationship with the Latin American nation across a variety of areas, from economics, trade, investment, to culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, the official stated.

Deputy Minister Binh also highlighted the results of PM Chinh's official visit to the Dominican Republic, saying that the trip demonstrated that the country attaches importance to and desires to further strengthen and deepen the solidarity, friendship, and co-operation with the Caribbean nation.

The Vietnamese leader held important and highly productive talks with President Luis Abinader Corona, during which both sides issued a joint statement reaffirming the commitment of the two governments and outlining agreed-upon directions and measures, to further step up the bilateral relations in the future.

The outcomes of the trip are expected to usher in a new phase in the relationship between the two countries, thereby promoting momentum to expand and deepen all-around collaboration efforts, effectively contributing to the development of both nations, and bringing peace, stability, and co-operation to the two regions and the world, Deputy Minister Binh went on to say.

PM Chinh has suggested that the two sides soon conduct negotiations on a free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement, as well as enhance collaboration in culture, education - training, and the mutual exemption of ordinary visas, Deputy Minister Binh added.
