PM urges Can Tho to develop rapidly

Can Tho should surmount current weaknesses and shortcomings in order to maintain rapid and sustainable development, fitting its position as a regional economic and political hub.

The remarks were made by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at his meeting with key leaders of the Mekong Delta city on March 21.

Dung praised the city’s 2012 socio-economic achievements, including its GDP growth of 11.55 percent and a 17.7 percent rise of service turnover.

He asked the city to focus on developing transport, healthcare, education and tourism infrastructure.

Dung also ordered municipal authorities to seek measures to help local businesses overcome difficulties and develop production.

The city should pay attention to climate change and rising sea levels, Dung noted.

Chairman of the Can Tho City People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Son briefed the PM on the city’s 2013 targets, including GDP growth of 12.5 percent, per capita average income of VND60 million (around US$ 3,000), and jobs for 50,000 people.
