PM Chinh proposes new award to honor talented, creative and dedicated women

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 6 met with female leaders and managers from central agencies and presented the 2025 Kovalevskaia Award at the Government Headquarters, marking the 116th anniversary of International Women’s Day (March 8) and the 1986th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung Uprising.

At the event, PM Chinh expressed appreciation to Vietnamese women nationwide for their contributions to families, communities, society and the country. He also recognized female leaders, managers, intellectuals and scientists as representatives of a generation of Vietnamese women known for talent, determination and dedication to national development.

The Kovalevskaia Award, named after 19th-century Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevskaia, is a prestigious prize for female scientists. Over 41 years of operation (1985-2026), the award has honored 23 groups and 58 individual women scientists for research achievements with significant scientific and practical value.

In 2025, the award was presented to one group and one individual. The group from the Faculty of Food Engineering, School of Chemistry and Life Sciences, Hanoi University of Science and Technology was recognized for a research project titled “Application of biocatalysis to enhance the value of Vietnamese agricultural products.”

The research focuses on using microorganisms and enzymes to develop food products from Vietnamese agricultural materials such as rice and maize, including fresh instant pho with extended shelf life that has been developed in cooperation with enterprises for export to Europe.

The award was also presented to Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Viet Nga, Director of the Vietnam-Japan Institute of Technology and senior lecturer at the Faculty of Environmental Engineering, National University of Civil Engineering. She is a specialist in water and wastewater treatment, with research linked to Vietnam’s needs in environmental protection, energy security and climate change adaptation.

According to Le Thi Thuy, Party Committee Secretary of the Vietnam Women’s Union, from 2022 to 2026 the Kovalevskaia Award ceremony has been held as part of the Government leadership’s annual meeting with outstanding women in various fields on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The event reflects recognition by the Party and the State of women’s contributions while reaffirming the policy of promoting gender equality and developing high-quality female human resources.

Speaking at the ceremony, PM Chinh emphasized that Vietnamese women are a vital domestic resource contributing to the country’s development and renewal. He called for continued efforts to improve institutions and policies for developing female leaders and managers, and to encourage women’s participation in scientific research, innovation, digital transformation and green transition.

He also proposed studying the establishment of a new award titled “Talented, Creative and Dedicated Women”, to be presented annually on Vietnam Women’s Day (October 20) in recognition of women’s contributions in various fields and to show the core values and cultural qualities of Vietnamese women.

On this occasion, the Government leader encouraged Vietnamese women to continue enhancing their role across all areas of social life and contributing to national development by preserving traditions, promoting creativity, mastering knowledge, confidently integrating internationally and contributing to national development in the future.
