PM Chinh leaves for Japan to attend expanded G7 Summit

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh departed Hanoi on May 19 for Japan to attend the expanded summit of the Group of Seven (G7) and pay a working visit to Japan from May 19 to 21 at the invitation of his Japanese counterpart Kishida Fumio.

The Vietnamese Government leader was accompanied by Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Tran Van Son, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phoc, Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang, among others.
The invitation of Vietnam to attend the expanded G7 Summit by Japan, which is holding the rotating presidency of the G7, demonstrates the importance that the G7 in general and Japan in particular attaches to the country’s increasing role in the region.

The expanded G7 Summit is viewed as an important international forum, bringing together the leaders of 7 leading industrialized countries and prestigious international organizations and countries to discuss ways to promote cooperation and deal with global problems.

This reflects the positive recognition of the G7 countries and the international community for Vietnam's position and prestige as well as its active and responsible efforts and contributions to stepping up international cooperation in addressing global challenges in recent times.

This is the third time Vietnamese leaders have attended the summit, following their attendance in 2016 in Japan and in 2018 in Canada, and the second time Vietnam has been invited as a single nation, not in its capacity as a representative of an organisation or a group of countries in the region.

Amid Vietnam and Japan marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2023, the trip of PM Chinh to Japan is expected to further consolidate mutual trust and drive bilateral relations forward, particularly cooperation in focal areas such as economy, trade, new-generation ODA, high quality infrastructure, green transformation and energy transition, as well as boost coordination in regional and international issues of mutual concern.

At this expanded G7 Summit, Vietnam continues to affirm its best efforts alongside the international community to propose and implement practical and effective measures to strengthen cooperation globally and regionally in maintaining peace and stability, promoting recovery and sustainable development after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as handling global issues on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, such as ensuring energy security, food security, and gender equality responding to climate change, and intensifying epidemic prevention.

Vietnam is determined to effectively implement its commitments to join hands to solve common problems of the world and the region, such as the commitment to reduce net emissions to "zero" by 2050.

Through attending the summit, Vietnam will share its development experience from the perspective of a country promoting industrialization, modernization and comprehensive and extensive international integration.  The nation hopes that G7 countries and participating countries will share lessons, good practices, and effective ways in handling global issues as well as challenges for sustainable development, especially for developing countries.

Vietnam also wishes to join Japan and the international community in making efforts to contribute to maintaining peace, stability and cooperation in the region basing on respect for the UN Charter and international law, enhancing regional economic linkages, connecting infrastructure, especially in Southeast Asia and the Mekong sub-region, cooperating in developing digital economy, green economy, circular economy, environmental protection, climate change adaption, and ensuring energy security, and food security.

On the occasion of his attendance at the conference, PM Pham Minh Chinh will hold talks with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida, meet Japanese leaders, businesses and friends to compare notes on directions and measures to add fresh impetus the extensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan, thus better serving the interests of the two peoples as well as making more positive contributions to peace, stability and prosperity, development cooperation in the region and in the world as a whole.

In addition, attending the meeting is also an opportunity for Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to meet with leaders of countries and international organizations to augment bilateral cooperation and exchange views on issues of mutual concern.
