PM Chinh hopes for Germany's early ratification of EVIPA

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed that Germany swiftly ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) during a meeting held with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on January 24 in Hanoi.

At the meeting, the Vietnamese Government leader expressed his confidence that the German President’s visit will create fresh motivation for the expansion of the Vietnam-Germany strategic partnership moving forward.

He thanked Germany for providing a large number of COVID-19 vaccines to the country, a significant factor in helping Vietnam to contain the pandemic and boost its socio-economic recovery.

PM Chinh affirmed that the country greatly values the role and position of Germany in the region and throughout the wider world, with a strong desire to further deepen its partnership with the European country across a multitude of fields.

In response, the German President applauded the dynamic economic development of the nation over the years.

The two leaders showed elation at the progress made in bilateral relations during the past decades, especially the efficiency of joint projects such as the Vietnamese-German University and the German House in Vietnam.

PM Chinh briefed his guest on the tremendous achievements the country has recorded in socio-economic development and international integration throughout nearly 40 years of implementing the “Doi Moi” (Renewal) process.

The nation is therefore focusing on making strategic breakthroughs by completing the institution, developing the infrastructure system, promoting human resources, and restructuring the national economy in association with renovating the growth model. This includes giving priority to boosting the digital economy and digital transformation, green growth, and the circular economy, he told his guest.

The country also aims to enhance science-technology development and innovation, while simultaneously making responsible commitments to the climate change response, he said, emphasizing that these are areas the Vietnamese side aspires to augment co-operation with Germany in.

As a way of further increasing bilateral ties, both sides consented to intensify the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially high-level ones, thereby helping to improve political trust and mutual understanding whilst creating fresh momentum for further collaboration. This is along with maintaining co-ordination and mutual support at multilateral forums such as the UN and the ASEAN - Germany and ASEAN - EU co-operation frameworks.

Affirming that economics, trade, and investment are the pillars of bilateral relations, the two leaders concurred to continuously encourage German businesses to invest in Vietnam, especially in the fields Germany boasts strengths in such as energy, railways, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure.

PM Chinh also requested that Germany move to soon ratify the EU - Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), continue to work with Vietnam to effectively implement the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) in which Germany is a participant so that Vietnam can achieve its emission reduction goal as committed at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26), as well as in the implementation of development co-operation projects funded by Germany. Indeed, priority should be given to infrastructure construction, sustainable development, and renewable energy.

The two leaders also reached a consensus on increasing collaboration in high-quality human resources training and development, along with speeding up the building of co-operation mechanisms and frameworks in vocational training.

The German President displayed his hope that the Vietnamese workforce will soon have an opportunity to work in the Central European country to help them deal with their labour shortage.

PM Chinh suggested that Germany continue assisting and offering favourable conditions for the community of more than 200,000 Vietnamese people in Germany to successfully integrate into, make greater contributions to socio-economic development for the German side, and serve as a bridge in connecting the two nations.

The German President spoke glowingly of the Vietnamese community in Germany and consider them to be a valuable asset in the relationship between the two countries and two peoples.

Regarding international and regional issues of shared concern, the two leaders underlined the need to maintain peace and stability, whilst also settling disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law. They therefore voiced their support for the freedom of navigation and overflights in the East Sea on the basis of international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
