PM Chinh arrives in Rio de Janeiro for BRICS+ Summit and official visit to Brazil

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, his spouse, and delegation landed at Galeao military airport in Rio de Janeiro at 5:45 a.m. (local time) on July 5, marking the start of their participation in the expanded BRICS Summit (BRICS+) and bilateral activities in Brazil.

Those welcoming Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, his spouse, and the Vietnamese delegation at Galeao military airport included Mr. Laudemar G. de Aguiar Neto, Secretary for Trade Promotion, Science, Technology, Innovation and Culture of Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Vietnamese Ambassador to Brazil Bui Van Nghi and Vietnamese Embassy staff.

With the theme “Strengthening cooperation in the Global South for more inclusive and sustainable governance”, the 2025 BRICS Summit is one of the most important multilateral events of the year which brings together around 20 heads of state and government, the United Nations Secretary-General, and leaders of various international organizations.

Representing Vietnam as the 10th partner country of BRICS, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is scheduled to deliver remarks at the summit’s high-level sessions, which will focus on strengthening multilateralism, economic and financial issues, artificial intelligence, the environment, climate change, and global health.

On the sidelines of the summit, the Vietnamese Government leader will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of participating countries and international organizations, reaffirming Vietnam’s role, aspirations, and responsible contributions to this multilateral mechanism. The meetings will also help deepen cooperation between Vietnam and BRICS member countries as well as other international partners.

This marks PM Chinh’s third consecutive visit to Brazil in as many years. Alongside his participation in the 2025 BRICS Summit, he will also engage in bilateral activities aimed at boosting multifaceted cooperation with Brazil, particularly in the economic domain.

Brazil is currently Vietnam’s largest trading partner in Latin America, while Vietnam is one of Brazil’s key partners in Southeast Asia. Bilateral trade has grown rapidly, reaching nearly US$8 billion in 2024. The two countries are striving to increase trade turnover to US$10 billion by 2025 and US$15 billion by 2030.

Both sides are keen to expand cooperation and tap into their respective strengths to meet each other’s needs. There remains considerable potential in areas such as trade, agriculture, energy, science and technology, defence and security, environmental protection, climate change response, and mineral resources.

Vietnam, in particular, hopes to soon launch negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Southern Common Market (Mercosur), of which Brazil is a member. The proposed FTA is expected to create a breakthrough in economic, trade, and investment ties between Vietnam and Brazil, generating practical benefits for both businesses and citizens. Brazil could also serve as a gateway for Vietnam to access markets across Latin America and the broader Mercosur bloc.

During the visit, PM Chinh is set to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, visit cultural and sports institutions, attend a business forum, and work with major Brazilian corporations. These activities are expected to help reinforce political trust and commitment, and enhance the Vietnam–Brazil relationship in a comprehensive, substantive, and sustainable manner for the benefit of both peoples.
