Party leader stresses gradual rebalancing of trade while maintaining growth
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam underlined the need for gradual rebalancing of trade while maintaining economic growth during a working session with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant agencies in Hanoi on March 17.
The session focused on international trade relations and connectivity with key partners amid current global geopolitical and geo-economic developments.
After hearing reports and opinions presented at the meeting, the Party chief acknowledged and hailed the sector’s performance in 2025, and asked the ministry to continue efforts to fulfil key tasks in 2026, in line with its role as a core pillar of the economy.
He also called on the ministry to fully incorporate feedback from the meeting, promptly review outstanding issues in economic and trade relations with key partners, report to the Politburo and the Party Central Committee, and put forward measures to resolve them.
On orientations for economic and trade ties in the period ahead, he stressed that Vietnam remains consistent with its independent and self-reliant foreign policy for peace, friendship, cooperation and development, while diversifying and multilateralising international relations and placing national interests at the highest priority.
He asked that, based on the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress and Politburo Resolution No. 66 dated April 30, 2025 on reforming law-making and enforcement in line with development requirements in a new era, relevant agencies draw up specific strategies to restructure the economy, gradually balance trade while maintaining growth, move away from outdated thinking, and ensure a balanced approach between expanding cooperation and managing risks.
Trade, he said, should be linked with technological upgrading, modern equipment and high-quality investment, alongside higher localisation rates, technology transfer and stronger positioning of Vietnamese enterprises in production chains.
The Party chief also instructed the Government Party Committee to focus resources on implementing a number of priorities, including accelerating sustainable exports, strengthening domestic production capacity and diversifying export-import markets; reviewing and improving inspection and supervision processes in production, quality management, testing and quarantine, as well as management of growing areas and traceability; and examining goods circulation flows.
He also asked for plans to develop industrial cooperation in a more substantive and balanced manner, with a focus on raising production capacity, localisation rates and added value for Vietnamese industrial products.
He tasked the Government Party Committee, the Party Committee of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant ministries and sectors with promptly studying and proposing solutions to implement these directions, while ensuring the principle that one task is assigned to a single lead agency responsible for its implementation which should be carried out in a decisive, methodical and creative manner and delivering substantive results.
