Party General Secretary To Lam begins State visit to Kazakhstan
VOV.VN - At 5:25 p.m. (local time) on May 5, a special aircraft carrying Party General Secretary To Lam, his spouse, and a high-level Vietnamese delegation touched down at Astana Airport, officially starting their State visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan from May 5 to 7, at the invitation of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Those welcoming the delegation at the airport were President Tokayev; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Murat Nurtleu; Deputy Prime Minister for Economic and Social Affairs Yermek Kosherbayev; Presidential Advisor for Foreign Affairs Erlan Kazykhan; Minister of Health Akmaral Alnazarova; Mayor of Astana Zhenis Kasumbek; and Kazakh Ambassador to Vietnam Kanat Tumysh. Representing the Vietnamese side were Ambassador to Kazakhstan Pham Thai Nhu Mai and Vietnamese Embassy staff.
At the airport, President Tokayev greeted Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse, and introduced senior Kazakh officials. Kazakh youths in traditional costumes presented flowers to the Party General Secretary and his spouse. President Tokayev then invited the Vietnamese leader and his spouse to walk along the red carpet between two rows of honor guards.
This is the first State visit by a top Vietnamese leader to Kazakhstan in 13 years and the first-ever visit by a Vietnamese Party General Secretary.
The visit underscores the Vietnamese Party and State’s consistent policy of strengthening friendship and comprehensive cooperation with traditional partners in Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and Eastern Europe, including Kazakhstan.
Vietnam and Kazakhstan established diplomatic ties on June 29, 1992. Since then, their traditional friendship has steadily deepened. Bilateral trade has seen positive growth but remains modest. In 2024, two-way trade reached US$800 million, up 99% from 2023. In the first quarter of 2025, bilateral trade turnover totaled US$146.3 million, a year-on-year increase of 18.4%.
