Party chief To Lam departs Hanoi for working visit to US

VOV.VN - Party General Secretary To Lam left Hanoi on the morning of February 18, heading to the US to attend the inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace for Gaza in Washington D.C., from February 18 to 20 at the invitation of US President Donald Trump, the Board’s Founding Chairman.

The Party leader is accompanied by General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member and Minister of National Defence; General Luong Tam Quang, Politburo member and Minister of Public Security; Nguyen Duy Ngoc, Politburo member and Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee; Le Hoai Trung, Politburo member and Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Pham Gia Tuc, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee and Chief of the Party Central Committee’s Office.

The Vietnamese delegation also include Nguyen Van Thang, member of the Party Central Committee and Minister of Finance; Nguyen Thi Hong, member of the Party Central Committee and Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam; Le Manh Hung, member of the Party Central Committee and Acting Minister of Industry and Trade; To An Xo, Assistant to the Party General Secretary, in charge of the Party General Secretary’s Office; and Nguyen Quoc Dung, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US.

The Peace Plan and the Board of Peace for Gaza proposed by President Donald Trump are seen as the most feasible initiative since the outbreak of the conflict in the Gaza Strip in October 2023, creating conditions for relevant parties to engage in dialogue and negotiations toward ending the conflict and moving toward a sustainable peace solution for the region.

To date, most of the countries invited have agreed to participate in the board, including those that signed its charter in Davos, Switzerland, as an expression of support and political commitment. Participants, however, remain at the stage of studying and developing implementation plans and have yet to make specific commitments regarding contributions or concrete forms of participation.

The Board of Peace for Gaza is structured with a diverse membership mechanism, allowing countries to participate and contribute according to their capacities, with the aim of supporting reconstruction, development and security efforts in the Gaza Strip. The board also seeks to promote multilateral cooperation and mobilise international resources for development programmes and humanitarian assistance.

Vietnam’s invitation to join the Board of Peace for Gaza reflects the international community’s recognition and high regard for the country’s role in peacekeeping activities and international cooperation. While not among the major financial contributors, Vietnam is expected to participate through its political credibility, post-conflict experience and capacity for non-military support.

The working visit to the US  by Party General Secretary To Lam and the Vietnamese high-level delegation is expected to contribute to efforts to promote peace, stability and sustainable development, while reinforcing confidence in international cooperative solutions, in which Vietnam has consistently been an active, constructive and reliable partner.
