Outstanding milestones in Vietnam-Argentina ties after five decades

VOV.VN - The past half century has witnessed many major milestones in co-operation between the nation and Argentina, Poldi Sosa Schmidt, chairwoman of the Argentina – Vietnam Culture Institute (ICAV), said in a recent media interview.

The friendship and co-operation ties between the nation and Argentina have been further strengthened and have grown steadily over the past five decades, Schmidt said, adding that Argentina was the third Latin American nation to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam on October 25, 1973, following Cuba and Chile.

The 1990s the two sides opened their embassies in each other’s capital, thereby helping to take bilateral ties to new highs. They signed two agreements on economic and trade co-operation, as well as promotion and reciprocal protection of investments.

Another milestone in their relations which helped to boost two-way trade was the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership back in 2010, the official emphasized.

Argentina has seen the nation among its top partners in the Southeast Asian region, she said, adding that together with the sound political-diplomatic ties, collaboration across the economy, as well as trade and investment between the two nations, has continued to bear fruit and providing a basis for their time-tested relations.

However, there remains plenty of room for both sides to bolster ties in culture and people-to-people exchanges, she said, expressing hope that academic exchanges will be further promoted, with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations serving as a prime opportunity for the two sides to bolster links in the fields.

Julia Perie, an Argentine parliamentarian at the Mercosur Parliament (Parlasur) and former chairwoman of the Argentina-Vietnam Friendship Association, also said both countries should take heed to intensifying academic and cultural exchanges to promote the co-operation potential that exists.

She highlighted that mutual ties have been developed based on the solidarity that exists between the two peoples and the support that they have given each other over the past five decades.

Highlighting economic-trade collaboration as a bright spot in the comprehensive partnership, with Vietnam being the sixth largest trade partner of the Latin American nation, Parie stressed that both sides boast huge potential to step up linkages. Indeed, it is necessary to enhance activities within their co-operation mechanisms on the basis of the two economies’ complementary strengths.

She added that both nations have enjoyed close ties at international organisations and multilateral forums, especially at the UN, the Non-Aligned Movement, the World Trade Organisation, and the  Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation, helping to bring practical benefits to people of each nation, while contributing to building a world of peace, stability, co-operation, and development.
