New Zealand pledges to support Vietnam in pandemic fight and economic recovery

VOV.VN - New Zealand will continue to join hands and support the ongoing Vietnamese pandemic prevention and economic recovery process through providing vaccine and medical aid.

Governor-General of New Zealand Dame Cindy Kiro made the commitment while receiving newly-accredited Ambassador Nguyen Van Trung who came to present the Credential Letter of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 22 in the capital of Wellington.

During the meeting, Ambassador Trung conveyed the best regards and wishes of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the Party, the National Assembly, and the Government leaders of Vietnam to the Governor-General, Government, and people of New Zealand.

He went on to express his great honour and responsibility at being appointed as the Vietnamese Ambassador to New Zealand at an important time, particularly with both nations making every effort to combat the pandemic and gradually revitalise the economy.

The Governor congratulated the nation on the success of the Vietnamese women's national football team and warmly welcomed Vietnam’s participation at the upcoming Women’s World Cup which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

According to Governor-General Cindy, her nation is resolved to implement the important contents of the strategic partnership that the two countries have set forth, including the target of seeing US$2 billion in two-way trade turnover by 2024.

Moving forward, New Zealand wishes to increase exchanges between businesses and people of the two countries, whilst simultaneously promoting investment and tourism development when the border reopens, she said.

In response, Ambassador Trung affirmed that he will do his utmost to nurture relations between the two peoples and promote the strategic partnership that was first established by senior leaders of the two sides in 2020.

He therefore proposed that the New Zealand Government continue to receive Vietnamese students to study in the country and facilitate the access of Vietnamese goods to its market, thereby fully exploiting the advantages of multilateral trade agreements, to which the two sides are members.

The Vietnamese diplomat also asked the New Zealand Government to create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community in the country, thus contributing to deepening the co-operation and mutual assistance between the two peoples.
