New RoK President pledges to further forge ties with Vietnam

VOV.VN - Newly elected President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Lee Jae Myung has reaffirmed Vietnam’s key role in the region and agreed to step up cooperation across multiple areas, from trade and security to high-tech innovation.

On the morning of June 12, at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, Vietnamese President Luong Cuong held phone talks with newly elected President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Lee Jae Myung, who took office on June 4.

On behalf of the Vietnamese State and people, President Luong Cuong congratulated President Lee Jae Myung on his election as the 21st President of the Republic of Korea, and conveyed greetings from Party General Secretary To Lam and other Vietnamese leaders.

President Luong Cuong appreciated President Lee’s attention to relations with the Asian region, emphasizing that the early phone conversation demonstrated his commitment to ties with Vietnam. He affirmed Vietnam’s support for the RoK’s development policies and expressed confidence that, under President Lee’s leadership, the RoK will continue to prosper, with its people enjoying greater happiness and its international role and standing further strengthened, thus making positive contributions to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.

The Vietnamese State leader noted with satisfaction the major achievements in bilateral ties over the past 30 years, especially since the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy of attaching importance to relations with the RoK and expressed hope for deeper, more substantive, effective, and long-term cooperation in the coming time.

For his part, President Lee Jae Myung expressed his sincere thanks to General Secretary To Lam and President Luong Cuong for their congratulatory messages following his election victory. He affirmed that the RoK Government always considers Vietnam an important partner in the region and looks forward to working closely to propel bilateral relations forward.

President Lee hailed Vietnam’s recent socio-economic development achievements and expressed his desire to work together toward shared progress. He also called on Vietnam to continue creating favorable conditions for Korean businesses to invest and expand operations in the country.

The two leaders agreed on major directions to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They committed to maintaining and enhancing high-level and all-level exchanges; expanding cooperation in national defence, security, and combating transnational crime; and stepping up economic, trade, and investment cooperation to tackle global challenges.

They also pledged to make science and technology, innovation, and particularly high-tech industries key pillars of bilateral cooperation, while augmenting co-operation and mutual support at regional and international forums. This includes close coordination for the successful organization of the APEC Summit in the RoK in 2025, the APEC Summit in Vietnam in 2027, and the co-chairing of the Mekong-RoK Cooperation mechanism.
