NA to set election date, agree to shorten 15th legislature’s term

VOV.VN - The National Assembly (NA) will vote on two resolutions on 21 May morning regarding the early conclusion of the 15th legislature and the 2021–2026 term of People’s Councils at all levels, along with the date for the next general elections of deputies to the 16th NA and the 2026–2031 term of People’s Councils.

As part of the ongoing 9th session, the NA is scheduled to convene a plenary meeting to hear the proposal and verification report on a draft law revising several legislative documents, including the Law on the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Law on Trade Unions, the Law on Youth, and the Law on Implementation of  Grassroots Democracy.

Lawmakers will then deliberate on the proposed shortening of the current terms and the proposed election date, before proceeding to vote on the two draft resolutions. These matters were presented by the NA Standing Committee at the May 12 session.

In accordance with constitutional provisions and existing laws, and to implement Resolution No. 60-NQ/TW dated April 12, 2025, adopted at the 11th meeting of the 13th Party Central Committee, the NA Standing Committee, after careful and comprehensive consideration, has proposed that the general election be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The proposed schedule is deemed to meet practical demands and political requirements.

Therefore, the 15th NA tenure and the 2021–2026 term of People’s Councils are expected to end about three months earlier than originally planned, concluding in early April 2026 instead of July.

Based on the Party’s direction and practical needs, the National Assembly Standing Committee believes it is necessary to shorten the interval between the National Party Congress and the first sessions of the newly elected National Assembly and People’s Councils.

This will allow for the timely completion of high-level personnel arrangements and the assignment of new Central Committee members, thereby ensuring continuity, consistency, and coordination among key leadership positions across the Party, State, Government, Vietnam Fatherland Front, and socio-political organizations. It will also enable Party committees at all levels to promptly implement the resolutions adopted at the 14th National Party Congress and corresponding congresses at lower levels.

Later this morning, the NA will continue discussions on draft revisions to the Law on Election of Deputies to the NA and People’s Councils.

In the afternoon, deputies will hold group discussions on several topics, including draft amendments to the laws on the Vietnam Fatherland Front, Trade Unions, Youth, and Grassroots Democracy; a draft resolution on piloting specific mechanisms and policies to promote social housing development; and a draft resolution intended to replace Resolution No. 35/2021/QH15, which outlines special development mechanisms for Hai Phong city’s development.
