NA leader attends IPU-137 in Russia
VOV.VN - National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and her delegation on October 14 attended the 137th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU-137) in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
As many as 2,000 delegates, including more than 80 parliamentary leaders from IPU member nations joined the event on the theme “Promoting cultural pluralism and peace through inter-faith and inter-ethnic dialogue”.
In his opening speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the IPU nations promote a peaceful, creative and balanced agenda, to reduce conflicts, prevent the emergence of new separating opinions, including ethnic and religious ones towards shaping a fairer and firmer architecture of international relations.
IPU President Saber Chowdhury, in turn, asked parliamentarians to seek measures for current affairs, discuss a new agenda, and promote cultural pluralism and peace through inter-faith and inter-ethnic dialogue.
Under the framework of IPU-137 and related meetings from October 14-15, IPU members will hold a general debate on “promotion of cultural pluralism and peace through inter-faith and inter-ethnic dialogue”, adopt resolutions and reports of the standing committees, the final documents of the general debate, and adopt the theme of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights for IPU 139.
They will also elect a new IPU President for the 2017-2021 term and additional members of the executive committee, and discuss the IPU’s strategy for the tenure.
On the sidelines of the 137th IPU Assembly, NA leader Ngan met President of the Inter-parliamentary Union (IPU) Saber Chowdhury, during which she reiterated Vietnam’s commitments to integrating sustainable development goals in national socio-economic development programs.
The country looks forward to further supporting from the international community to achieve these goals, she noted.
President Chowdhury for his part praised Vietnam as a role model in carrying out IPU resolutions, adding that fruitful bilateral cooperation has remarkably contributed to the IPU’s development.
On this occasion, the Vietnamese top legislator handed over a letter of invitation to Chowdhury to attend the 26th Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) in Vietnam next year.
