NA Chairman desires expanded energy cooperation with Malaysia

VOV.VN - Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met leaders of Petronas, Malaysia's state-owned oil-and-gas company, in Kuala Lumpur on September 17, calling for enhanced cooperation in LNG, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture to ensure stable, long-term energy supply.

The meeting is part of the NA Chairman's activities on the occassion of attending the 46th AIPA General Assembly and an official visit to Malaysia.

At the meeting, the top Vietnamese legislator stated that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Malaysia has been steadily strengthened in recent years, achieving important results on both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Energy and oil and gas cooperation remain a key pillar, with Petronas and Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) implementing multiple joint projects. Both sides are also expanding cooperation into new areas such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and renewable energy.

Chairman Tran Thanh Man acknowledged and praised Petronas’ positive contributions over the years to Vietnam’s energy security and the overall development of Vietnam-Malaysia relations. Given the remaining potential for cooperation amid regional energy transition efforts, he expressed hope that Petronas will continue cooperating with Vietnam in line with each party’s needs and capabilities, while ensuring a stable and long-term gas supply, and promoting green energy, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, consistent with both countries’ net-zero emission commitments.

The Vietnamese NA leader also urged Petronas to closely coordinate with PetroVietnam in carrying out agreed projects efficiently, ensuring progress, safety, and compliance with Vietnamese and Malaysian laws, with specific evaluations for next-generation energy projects expected to be commercially exploited in 2025.

He highlighted the importance of supporting training, technology transfer, and human resource development, making it possible for each cooperative project to bring economic value while fostering friendship and building sustainable cooperation for the future.

In response, Petronas’ leaders expressed honor in welcoming Chairman Tran Thanh Man and applauded its long-standing, effective cooperation with PetroVietnam and the Vietnamese government over the past years.

The company affirmed its desire to continue effective co-operation and strengthen its presence in Vietnam. Petronas’ leaders noted that renewable energy cooperation between the two countries is progressing positively and expressed hope to realize the shared vision in this field soon. They also emphasized a strong willingness to cooperate closely with Vietnam on carbon capture and storage initiatives.

On this occasion, Petronas leaders introduced the Petronas Twin Towers to  the Vietnamese NA, his spouse, and the Vietnamese high-level delegation. The iconic Malaysian towers, inspired by Islamic architecture blended with modern design, each rise 88 stories. They are connected by a skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors, measuring 170 meters high and 158 meters long, offering panoramic views of Kuala Lumpur from above.
